Tom Snyder is dead :(

"Entertainment Tonight" and others are reporting that legendary talk show host Tom Snyder is dead. Born May 12, 1936 in Milwaukee, he was 71 and apparently suffered from complications from leukemia. CBS News played comments from a couple entertainers, most notably David Letterman. :'(

The AP article needs a correction...TS' Late Late Show ended in 1999, not 1998.

:( :( :( :(

Great conversation, big laughs, toy trains in the studio at Christmas time, good stories...all while the ice clinked in your Colortini. Guess you'll be seeing Mother Snyder soon--maybe this time she won't bug you as much for hair nets and Canadian Club!! ;)

They don't make 'em like you anymore....

*In remembrance*
1936 - 2007

Being a baby-boomer who grew up in Los Angeles, I remember Tom Snyder well from the "KNBC News Service" in the mid and late 1960s. Synder was the sole anchor on the 6:00PM News, Jess Marlow did 5:00, and another Tom who made in big (Brokaw) anchored the 11:00PM news. The broadcast was very slick and seemed technologically advanced for it's time. The format and Tom's irreverent manner as anchor (in my opinion) were responsible for knocking longtime ratings leader Jerry Dunphy on KNXT (CBS) out of the number one spot.

Tom also worked at independent KTLA in Los Angeles.

RIP, Tom.

I really enjoyed his show after Letterman. It was very easy going and relaxing. Tom would often mention his mom,
companion or should I say "The Companion" as he would refer to his girlfriend on air. And those early morning trips outside with the dog. You had a true sense of watching a friend. He would playfully bust the crew (Late, Late Show).
Show clips of the director who was on The $25,000 Pyramid with Dick Clark in the 70's. Bust Letterman on running over. I'll miss him.

If anyone reading this has his "Late Late Show" intro & outro. Please post it over on Youtube. It was classy.

I had the op to work with Snyder during the LLS days and he was a class act. One of the nicest guys I have ever worked with. rest in peace tom...I hope you had no turbulence on the way up to heaven!

Tom Snyder

Definitely a one-of-a-kind talent.

God be with you, Tom.

Dave will probably mention Tom on tonights show. If its not a repeat. But will Craig at 12:30am mention Tom?
He should. Tom was THE FIRST HOST after Dave on CBS at the 12:30am slot.

A bit of trivia...

Early in his career, Tom Snyder worked at WSAV-AM here in Savannah, Georgia (now Cumulus-owned WBMQ).

In the mid-late '80s, Craig Kilborn, Snyder's successor at The Late Late Show, did play-by-play for the now defunct Savannah Spirits basketball team and did sports reporting on weekend newscasts on our NBC affiliate, WSAV, here in Savannah.

According to the CBS websites, Craig will address tonight, Dave tomorrow. Which tells me once again, Dave has already done his show for tonight (probably last week). As much as I like Dave, I dislike his pre-recording. These shows need to be topical.

As for Snyder, always one of my favorites. Abrasive? Sure. Funny? Absolutely. An authentic broadcaster who loved what he did? No doubt.

A lot of people forget he was a helluva anchorman as well, in Philidelphia, New York, and Los Angeles. Many have criticized women for copying the late Jessica Savitch, but frankly, a lot of men copied Snyder. Ever see Paul Moyer in LA? Almost a clone.

Snyder could be obnoxious, especially by the the standards of the 1970's, but he stood out. A one of a kind talent. He always enjoyed the parodies that others did of him, taking the approach that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". I guess what I liked about him the most was that he seemed to genuinely enjoy what he was doing, and that came shinining through that glass tube.

EDIT: Letterman did indeed do a short tribute to Snyder tonight (Monday).

Letterman gave him a mention on Monday night. He also mention Tom's show following him until 1998. I thought Craig Kilborn took over in 1999? Anyways, I flipped over to Jay Leno and a piece was in progress there. A shot of Jay with Tom which had to be about 15 years old maybe? There was an ancient CNBC bug in the corner with no NBC peacock, if that helps.

Leno's tribute was brief but very sincere and after it was over he left the stage very quickly, understandable knowing Jay REALLY respected Tom Snyder.

Letterman usually tapes in the afternoon the day of the show, unless he's on vacation.

The three times I was there (1995, 1997 and 1999), he taped at 5:30 PM ET. Each time, the show was as close to an hour as possible. They taped a Top 10 segment for the Olympics during a commercial break at one of the shows (1997, I think).

Getting back to Tom Snyder, when was he last on Dave's CBS show, if at all? I know Johnny Carson appeared on Dave's show in 1994 (he had done a week out west for May sweeps that year).

Check out YouTube, (can I mention that here?)...do a Tom Snyder search and you will find a great Snyder interview of Letterman, broken up in several parts, unless CBS has closed it down by now, entirely possible. EDIT: It's still up!
