TOMMY EDWARDS IS LEAVING "LOVE FM"

The most hopeful part of this story is that Li'l Tommy may finally show up on the New/Old WLS where he belongs!

The article does say it probably would be a weekend gig. Of course, if Lujack would join the cast, that would suit him perfectly--ala, the Beat's gig for him.

Is there a way out of Scott Shannon's feed for WLS FM?
I can just hear 'Lar and Tommy wisecracking about the bird fed signal.
While I look forward to the possiblilty of this happening, I am reminded of the 1980's when AM/FM was partly simulcast, and while
the FM was nice, I reaaallly appreciated the AM, which worked in a 200-300 mile radius, so I could listen unless I was
real far, far, FAR from home. Listeners from many states would make time to hear "Animal Stories" at 9:45.
The rebroadcast at 7:45 AM the next day picked up many listeners from an even wider range, especially in winter, when the
50kw got out to 500-600 miles or better.

It would be a pity if such a good show were limited to the 60-70 mile coverage of WLS FM.

That's why Al Gore invented the Internets.

The internet does not work when drving up and down through the hilly country of southern Illinois, darkest Wisconsin, etc.
The ease and simplicity of turning on the radio will always be preferable to me.
I have never had any success with trying to stream audio while in the car, but WLS has been reliable my entire life throughout
a 500 mile radius in daytime.

The internet makes an OK radio for fixed location listening, but it's not even the full radio program, as ads are stripped out.

I expect it will get better, but I was making the point that for these reasons AM is better than FM.

Tom....

Sooner or later....probably sooner...wimax technology will be widely available and you'll be able to easily have streaming web radio in your car.  Even without wimax, this is technically available right now.
But the availability and ease of use will get even better.  You'll not only be able to have your 'LS (fm or am) or other local terrestial stations easily accessable anywhere you go in your car, but you'll also have a whole array of high quality web streams that blow away the (mostly) junk you currently get from satellite radio.

WLS does not sound like the Big 89 anymore! When I leave for work at 3 AM from La Porte County to South Bend, IN, WLS' signal is terrible. It does not BOOM in, like the 50,000 watt flamethrower I remember. It fades in and out like some 1,000 watt daytimer. I get KXEL (1540 AM) from Waterloo, IA much clearer many mornings.

I was able to listen to WLS-FM using a borrowed BlackBerry Curve, so there ARE options to listen while mobile. I really hope Citadel does reprise the old "Big 89" that we loved so much. I would buy a BlackBerry to hear Animal Stories here in Ohio...
