Tommy G returns

Tommy G has been filling in a lot on Greater Media's WCTC and sounding good. It is nice that he stayed in the Jersey area and it is much better that he graduated to being on the air during the day.

Or, maybe he's just doing some fill-in work. Sometimes things are simple.

I wouldn't hold my breath for local FM talk for Monmouth/Ocean.

It seems that way. Press & Greater Media seem pretty committed to the low-rated stations that they have on their hands (WBBO & WJRZ respectively). Both stations must be very inexpensive to run, which is pretty much the only way I can imagine they're not hemorrhaging money. Neither is willing to make what might be a greater investment in a News/Talk station, but would lead to ratings easily doubling (perhaps even tripling) what they currently have now.

Would triple the ratings(?) equal triple the billing?

Well, that's the problem. $$$ seems to screw everything up. It's one thing to have enough to cover the bills, pay your staff, pay for promotional material, but at the end of the day, when will $$$ be enough? Oh, wait....enough to a point to "sell out" your brand for a cloned format you can get everywhere else. Thank the lord for Internet radio ;D

So let me understand. You'd be willing to make a multi-million dollar investment in a radio station with a limited signal, take a format that we assume is providing a decent return on that investment, throw that away for a format that has a remote chance of doubling or tripling ratings (unproven theory...ratings could drop), and cost significantly more money to operate (talent, promotions, etc.) -- then be willing to settle for a lower profit just so that you don't "sell out" your brand (whatever that means)? Sounds like a great idea!

Let me clarify, when I'm referring to a "brand" I'm talking about the likes of G-Rock, WJRZ as Classic Hits, etc, that were doing fine but got blown up to other formats (Hit 106 and Magic) that didn't fly like they expected it to do when other stations were serving that particular format(s). When B98.5 got blown up by press in 2005, people went to get their CHR fix on Z100, or Q102 and Wired 96.5, then came along WAYV, KTU, PLJ, SoJo, and The Point started playing Top 40, and 92.3 was coming in the works, and all of a sudden G-Rock went to Hit 106, playing the same format that the stations I mention above. Remember the K104/107 simulcast? How long did that Top 40 format last in this area? Same goes for WJRZ. People were getting their AC/Soft Rock fix on Lite FM, WOBM, The Breeze, and WFPG, but instead went there when they launched Magic and they're pretty much going nowhere like they expected it to.

Fair enough. But what's your definition of "doing fine?" Is "doing fine" playing music that appeals to you, personally?

"Doing fine" is defined by the station owner (whether we like it or not). The bottom line is that if management makes poor decisions, there will be no demand from advertisers to be on the station and changes will be made. You can't necessarily judge a station's performance by what we see in the 12+ beauty numbers. It has to be judged by billing and profit.

My guess is that in a smaller market, broad based formats like CHR and A/C are easier formats to sell to advertisers than alternative or other niche formats. It must be tough, economically, to run a radio station...especially in a congested area like the northeast where you are on the fringes of a major metro...you have to do what you can to get by...not to mention that everyone is fighting over the same shrinking pie of advertising dollars.

Tommy G announced once again that he will be on WCTC for Bert Baron tomorrow.

Speaking of Tommy G, on the day of Hurricane Sandy his show from his home studio was simulcasted on WCTC in place of the nationally syndicated Laura Ingraham Show and it sounded great. This leads me to believe that they were testing equipment for a future simulcasted local Jersey talk show for Ocean/Monmouth. Also during Sandy, Tommy G had congressman Frank Pallone, the JCP&L and PSE&G spokespeople, along with many township mayors calling in. Tommy G is one aggressive dude who seems committed to local talk radio here in Jersey. The best part was he never stopped broadcasting crediting his reliable Honda generator.

From reading through this thread, I only wish that back in the day, my press agent was as active as this one appears to be... ::)
He/She is definitely earning their bucks... :D

My only critique would be to vary the writing style so it's not as obvious. ;D

/snark ends...

Tommy G filled in for Bert Baron today on wctc. He got a lot of calls and he said he will be on tomorrow with one of his guests being Bob Ingle, who was formerly heard on 101.5.
