Tommy "Love" McCullough arrested for on-air comments

Since no one else has posted about it yet, I'll start things. The Taylor on Radio-Info newsletter carried this gem this morning. Here's the rundown:

Apparently this McCullough character is part of the Tom and Wayne Morning Show on Ozark's 1210 WQLS. He said some negative things about the way a financial company harasses poor black people to collect on debts, leading to a call from the guy who goes around, um, "encouraging" people to pay what they owe. McCullough said he'd meet a debt collector trying to enter his home with a bat, which led to his arrest for making a threat over public airwaves.

The Dothan Eagle's article 'splains it better.

...and they say nothing exciting ever happens down on the Wiregrass.

Thoughts?

The Dothan Eagle article says that McCullough was speaking hypothetically. I don't see how anyone could interpret that as a serious threat, especially toward someone who called in under a fake alias. Now, if McCullough called out Michael Schaule directly, then that's different--and he's probably in some serious mess.

But if the facts ultimately are proven as described, then the police likely overreacted, and I hope this case is thrown out.

People are concerned about racism in the Wiregrass? Strange.

I've always heard this story in the Dothan / Ozark area that I thought was funny. Around 50 years ago, before black people were "equal", the black funeral homes would not release the body for the family to bury until the bill was paid in full. It worked, families would do absolutely anything to come up with the cash to pay the funeral home.

It was time for him to do something like this again. Not the first time to try shock-jock tactics to get publicity. May be the first time to be arrested though. He's gone after the mayor...council...hospital...fast food, whomever he thinks will get him noticed. Most just ignore him.

I'm with Nate on this one, I don't see how his speaking hypothetically (if true) would constitute an active threat against a specific caller.

While I'm not surprised at the antics of someone on the radio to get attention, it is kind of odd coming from a gospel station. ::)

Come on Tom, keep in mind that the favorite TV News channel for the neo-cons of the Bible Belt is Fox News, owned by Rupert Murdock, and while Fox Noise spouts off about the lack of border control in the US to keep the immigrants out and spouts off about the loss of family values, Mr. Murdock (Australian) has English publications that are just slightly more than a little liberal. Speaking of which, the Senator from ID and his recent mens' room dallies, the congressman from LA that kept hookers, the republican from FL hitting on pages, Newt impeaching Clinton while he's in the midst of dumping a wife for a girl friend, and on and on and on. You of all people shouldn't be surprised by in your face hypocrisy.

To quote the Geico caveman... "uh what."

Replying to Zach about this being on on a gospel station. Well, never mind, ADD kicked in again. Sorry I lost you Dale.
