The death of "The Diamond King", Tommy Van Scoy brings to mind a time when an integral part of radio advertising was the use of the jingle. His "I'm a luck girl.......horray oh boy" was a classic. Any thoughts on favorite jingles of clients of days gone by?
Here's my list:
Moror Twins ("I keep on moving at Motor Twins, that's why the people know the car I'm in")
Golden Quality Ice Cream ("Howdy Folks I'm Goodie Golden delicious as can be". )
Dunmore Lumber ("Dunmore Lumber, Dunmore Lumber, has more than just lumber for you!!!")
Shorten Dodge ("Ride Ride Ride new Shorten Dodge")
Affiliated Foods "(Drive your car into our store and park it, and you'll save more at our modern super market!!!" )
and politicals
Mayor McNulty in his failed 1989 primary bid ("It's Mayor McNulty time....ONE MORE TIME, Mayor McNulty time!!!")

I have been put to the test, and I am frustrated that I can only come up with two. Each is beer related. Is there something subliminal here?

Stegmaier Beer - Ring-a-ding-ding, do the Stegmaier thing in the summertime...

Gibbons Beer - G-I-B-B-O-N-S, pure refreshing Gibbons. If it's Gibbons it's good, so the next time you should say: "Gimme, gimme, gimme Gibons.

There must be more. I guess too much "Ring-a-ding-ding". I'll re-visit tomorrow!

Yeah but Bob, while I have the quantity, you have the quality.
How in the world can I forget about those two classic jingles I grew up with?
Must be my own beer haze kicking in.

I remember that Stegmaier jingle being played constantly on WARM in the early '70s. I seem to remember they sponsored whole blocks of weekend time on WARM back then? Summertime - "Hot enough for ya? It's only WARM for me!"

Right you are! WARM had Steg as a sponsor for its Solid Gold Weekend, a tie in with Stegmaier gold medal beer. After the top 40 countdown, the Stegmaier Solid Gold Weekend began at 6 or 7pm and continued into Sunday night. I remember hearing it in the mid 1960s as you remember it in the 70s. They played the oldies which at that time weren't that old. In 1965, "Duke of Earl" was only 4 years old!!!
And speaking of "It's Only WARM For Me", Joey Shaver was on WVIA TV Thursday night doing a pitch with Bill Kelly for their fund drive. (They pulled out that wonderful WARM documentary). Joey brought a bag full of "IOWFM" buttons for Bill and 44 to use as premiums. Both Bill and Joey looked and sounded marvelous.

Is that WARM documentary the only show WVIA has?

Re: WARM

They whip that sucker out each time they're begging for money. Must be some subliminal messages thrown in there during the Bosco the Clown sequense:

GIVE NOW

WE NEED $$

Come on guys!!! You just happen to hit it all the time like I hit
that Suze Waldman program who makes me feel like such a big financial loser.
Actually, WVIA TV has done some pretty nice local documentaries. There
was one the other night about William Scranton. Then there was the Knox
Mine Disaster, The Women's Garment Workers, The Agnes Flood as well as some pretty interesting interviews that some of the local hosts do. But here's the
thing about that WARM documentary....it makes people stop and watch. WVIA TV
would be crazy not to bring that out every time they needed money. And as many
of us have posted here, the affection and pull of the heart for the old WARM just never seems to go away. As a radio client of mine told me in 1999 when I
was selling for the Citedal WARM (I'm still looking over my shoulder for an
indicement as an accomplice to murder), "I'm buying WARM for what it used to be, not for what it is now!"

I have never been a fan of public TV & Radio. I don't mid if they want to operate as a non-profit and beg for support, but I don't like my tax dollars being sent off to PBS. But..with that now said, WVIA is one of the few "Public" stations that actually produces programs to serve it's community, and isn't the sole home for snoots. They deserve some credit for that. I don't believe any of the commercial stations would have taken the time or spent the money to produce such a good program on WARM.

For every decent show on WVIA, there are dozen that are stunningly boring. You know the ones, where a bunch of the "usual suspects" like chamber of commerce types sit around a table and yammer about how great life is while they're bringing in telemarketing jobs. It's not a very good track record.

I agree with you there about the Chamber of Commerce types.
Ever notice that their salaries never go down but up and the
new business they attract pays near minimum wage?It must be
very hard for them to keep talking about NEPA's great work
ethic. Yeah, I could do with a little less of Austin Burtke and
the others telling us how hard they are working to bring in
better paying jobs. All 44 has to do is replay the same show
from 15 years ago.

> 2. Say hello to Insalaco's!

In the T102 studio computer, when I was there in '96, they had a clip of the high school football guys singing along with the Insalaco's jingle when they thought their mics were off :)

I also can't seem to get out of my head the jingle for The Big Wheel, a rollerskating place that advertised on WSBG when I was there in '96-'97. "Doo-doo-doo-doo-doodoo-doo-doo.... The Big Wheel!! .....Very exciting place!!........ The Big Wheel!!!!"

Where do ya go when ya fall in love?

You'll have a Jim Dandy tiiiiiime!

The "All New Rocky Glen Park" had a pretty annoying jingle, as I recall, but I've lost the details to age... oh well.

OK--enough of the TV talk, this is a RADIO board after all! :)

I was thinking about all of the local larger-than-life voices from the 70s and 80s who were doing commercials and I could only recall two "businessmen." They were Tommy Van Scoy and Elliot Katuna--the Jean King.

On the jingle subject, how about Keefers! Keefers Army and Navy!<P ID="signature">______________
