Tonight Show to Four Nights

when Conan did 4 new shows a weeks on NBC, he had reruns on Monday nights, on TBS he had new shows M-Th, no shows on Friday, Letterman didn't do Friday shows during the Summer during his final Late Show years, Colbert never did them during the summer and stopped them altogether a couple of years ago

IIRC, Carson had one night with a guest host, three new shows, and a rerun, at least later on.

I remember for a time it was:

  • Monday - Guest host
  • Tuesday - Best of Carson (For awhile he did new shows on Tuesday for Sweeps weeks.)
  • Wednesday to Friday - Fresh shows

Slightly off topic, but I'm watching the NY Yankees play the Kansas City Royals in Yankee stadium, and the camera catches Jimmy Fallon watching the game with his boss, Lorne Michaels.

"But 'radio' is not a monolith! There's no 'radio' guiding everything! Radio is a collection of many stations, not a single thing!"

Someone on this board said something like that to me whenever I suggested that the radio business as a whole has failed to respond effectively to the challenges presented by streaming, and is doing just fine, thank you very much.

But anyway, I'm not surprised. Fallon never really filled the shoes of his predecessors, nor did he rise to the level of "screw you guys, I'm making my own show" like Letterman or Conan, and didn't reinvent/deconstruct the genre like Craig Ferguson. In order for "late night" to compete, it has to move beyond the formula of "host delivers monologue, does a bit or two, then sits down with celebrities promoting their new movie/show" formula.
Very good insight here.

This is what I remember too, In the year or two right before Carson retired, it was Jay Leno on Mondays.

You remember correctly. IIRC, Leno took over the Monday shows after Carson's split with Joan Rivers because of her hosting her own show on Fox.
