Man, even *I* don't remember these, and I went through grammar school with my transister radio plugged into WPRO through the 60s! Great overall playlist, though. That's when Top 40 was Top 40.

Oh I remember this one. Great R&B song. "Searching searching searching for my baby (yes I am).
> > 15.Respectable...Outsiders
Definitely remember. The follow-up to Time Won't Let Me.

And you remember Teddy & The Pandas????????
Now what's still being played today:

1.Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby...Beatles (Yes but for how much longer)
2.Sunshine Superman...Donovan...Definitely still getting played but from the dreaded 60s so it'll probably remain only on Cool 102 soon
3.You Can't Hurry Love...Supremes...Never left the airwaves
5.Bus Stop...Hollies...Sadly gone with all their other hits other than Long Cool Woman although I hear He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother & Air That I Breathe on WPLM
6.Summer In The City...Lovin'Spoonful...Still a staple
11.Wouldn't It Be Nice...Beach Boys...Still around
17.96 Tears...? & The Mysterians...Still getting airplay
24.Beauty Is Only Skin Deep...Temptations...Still getting airplay

It's probably not much different than today's top 40 with a mixture of rock, pop,& soul.

I actually remember Teddy and The Pandas, and most of the songs, on this list.
That was a great time for Top 40, and all of it on AM, too....
Providence had WPRO and WICE. Boston had WBZ and WMEX. Worcester had WORC and WAAB. Springfield had WHYN and WTXL. Fitchburg-Leominster had WEIM. Hartford had WDRC and WPOP. New Haven had WAVZ and WNHC. Manchester, NH had WFEA and WKBR AM-FM. Albany, NY had WPTR and WTRY...I wish that I could time travel...

OK I was curious about Teddy & The Pandas because I don't remember the song. They actually have a website (doesn't everybody?): www.teddyandthepandas.com
They were fairly local, being from Beverly. Mentions of having toured with The Dave Clarke 5,Lovin Spoonful,Beach Boys. Apparently were popular in Boston radio at the time with a mention of WMEX & Ron Robin. Also a mention of some show at the Rhode Island Arena. I have no idea where that was but I'm sure Epsilon was in the audience.

Warning: if the sight of young guys with bangs in the mid 60s compared to what they look like today depresses you don't go to the website :)

Remember it? Hell, I still have a copy of it in my 45 stash somewhere.

I wasn't (I'm old but not quite *that* old). They're probably refering to the old RI Auditorium on North Main Street, which was the home of the AHL Providence Reds, who were the farm team for the NY Rangers.

What I miss most about those Top 40 days is how stations all over the country weren't afraid to play records by local bands even if they weren't hits in other parts of the country. In the early 70's Pawtucket-based Wadsworth Mansion also got a lot of airplay for their single "Sweet Mary" even though it wasn't a very big national hit. Now everything is so homogenized that the CHR station in Providence sounds just like the station in Cincinnati which sounds just like the station in Denver and so on ...

The Rockin' Ramrods were a local Boston/South Shore area band, popular in the mid-60's club scene. They were staples of the fabled, long lamented "Surf Nantasket".

That song title should read "Bright Lit Blue Skies".

Oh, I've heard of the Rockin' Ramrods, just hadn't ever heard that particular song.

In the late 70's a very good Boston band called The Real Kids did a song called "Better Be Good", which contained the lyric "..when we were rockin' with the Ramrods, and we were shakin' with the Pandas, and it don't seem the same without the Remains."

That would be Barry & The Remains. The name rings a bell but I can't think of anything I've heard by them. Two fairly local acts still getting airplay in Boston are Orpheus with Can't Find The Time on Oldies 103 & I hear Avenging Annie by Andy Pratt once in a while on WZLX.

Their biggest hit was probably "Don't Look Back" which stood head and shoulders with anything on Rhino's "Nuggets" box sets. All their material was re-issued on Epic back in the late 90s.

They were also an opening act for The Beatles in concert.

Barry Tashian and his wife Holly have been performing and recording as a folk/country duo for many years since, and nowadays Barry will also occasionally reunite The Remains for club shows featuring local 60's rock bands in the Boston clubs. I saw them a couple of times, including opening for the J. Geils Band reunion a few years ago at Boston's Paradise Club.

I remember that song, and I was listening to WABC in those days, with one of the most cautious playlists in the country.
