Tonight's football game

Tonight's Giants - Cowboys game is on WIP-AM with one national feed and on both WPEN AM & FM with a different national feed. The WIP-AM feed is the same feed that used to be the Westwood One announcers. This is the same one that is on the Sirius-XM NFL channel. I was driving and wanted to find out the score so I turned on my Sirius radio. I then wondered if any of the 4 sports stations in town were broadcasting it. I was surprised that 3 of the 4 were broadcasting 2 different national feeds.

How is that possible that 2 different national networks are broadcasting the same game to 2 different radio stations in the same city?

Note: I'm home now and watching on channel 10. I'm a Pats fan so, this game should be taking place in Foxborough, MA right now.

There is a loophole (I guess you could call it that) in the NFL rules that allows a team to have radio affiliates anywhere in America. Compass Media (the producers of the broadcast you heard on 97.5) is stepping into that loophole. They are, officially, running a Dallas Cowboys radio network (a second one, separate and apart from the main one that is directed at Cowboys fans). Though they never say that on the air and they present the broadcast like it's national, their contract is with the Cowboys, not the NFL.

They've done the same thing with the Oakland Raiders, and the LA Angels (of Anaheim) in MLB.

They also have NFL games on their schedule that don't involve either the Cowboys or the Raiders. I'm not sure how they got those.

There are three broadcast organizations that offer national NFL game packages.

One is Dial Global, which is the legacy Westwood One package. I believe they generally have exclusivity for Thursday, Saturday, Sunday Night, Monday Night, and the playoffs. However my guess is there's an exception when the Cowboys are involved...see below...

The second feed - the one your heard on WPEN - is from Compass Media. They also have a Sunday NFL package, and they also produce and manage the Cowboys and Raiders games. WPEN aired some of the Compass Media games last year when the Eagles were on Sunday or Monday nights or were on bye - I don't think they aired any games when the Eagles were on but I could be wrong. There is also a third national NFL package from Sports USA. They do Sunday doubleheaders. Link: http://www.sportsusaradio.com/nfl-play-by-play-schedule

It appears the NFL doesn't establish exclusivity for Sunday afternoon games - since there are three national packages I am aware of.

thanks. I was only aware of the Global Dial games. That's the radio feed I've heard driving around in the past. As I said, that game was on Sirius and wanted to see if any of the local Philly stations had the game on too. It would have assumed that if WIP had paid to have the game, it would be exclusively theirs but, somehow WPEN comes in with the "local" feed. I guess it is the same way that WIP has Phillies playoff games from ESPN radio while the local broadcasts were on WPHT.

Meant to say when WPEN has Phillies games.

FWIW yesterday 9/9. WBBR/1130 in New York had the late Carolina/Tampa Bay game; a Compass Media feed...
