Tonight's The Night -- For Nightime AM HD

9/14/07

This is the first night that the FCC now allows AM stations to broadcast in HD -- at night.

At 7:30pm tonight, no AM stations in the DFW area have chosen to broadcast in HD.

Here's the AM stations in the DFW area that I can get in HD, based on daytime listening:

570 KLIF

770 KAAM

1270 KFLC

1310 KTCK

--------------------

1080 KRLD's HD signal was not coming in for me this afternoon, but they have been broadcasting in HD.

820 WBAP has not switched to HD yet.

----------------------

The iBiquity website indicates that other AM stations in the area are HD.
But, that list is not up to date.

---------------------------------

FYI, I prefer AM HD for Music, ie 770 KAAM.

However, for News/Talk/Sports Radio.... I prefer no HD for AM Broadcasts.
I prefer my News/Talk/Sports in non-delay, non-reverb, non-stereo, Analog.

Never mind the news and traffic reports, at least the fart noises are coming in CD quality clear ;D

nothing like a relaxing sound of "hash" to kick back and listen to.

So that's a total of 6 AM stations that I can get in HD in the DFW area.

WOAI destroys KFXR, just like everybody predicted. It is as bad as I thought it would be, if not worse. I strongly suspect it was WOR sidebands on not only WGN last night, but also that local 700. I also suspect that WFAN sidebands were over WSM, and 670. I also noted a good deal of noise on WWL, which is usually like a local here, as well as a lot of noise on 890. I strongly suspect WCBS. These are all stations that rarely if ever made it in here, even when the frequencies were clear. But the sidebands - even at reduced power - are VERY robust. More so than I thought.

That said - I don't think there is much hope for KAAM IBOC reception even locally, because WABC sidebands would interfere and cause bit errors.

I do not know of any AM stations that broadcast to the DFW area that are broadcasting in HD after dusk.

A couple of nights ago --- Radio Disney was not. KRLD was not. KLIF and the ticket were, I think a couple of other spanish stations maybe 1270 and 1440.
