Tony Awards Review

Always a class act. Again this year starting with Hugh Jackman.

Billy Crystal nice surprise.

What's wrong with Christina Applegate. She couldn't hold a note as she sang "If you could see me now" from Sweet Charity. Bad night or can't she sing. She could keep time with the orchestra - either singing ahead or behind them. No sense of timing.

That was quite funny.

However, watching it on TV is much better than being there in person, since you don't have to wait through the seemingly endless commercial breaks. That said, if you can go, go. Seeing a major awards show at least once in person is worth it!<P ID="signature">______________

Tony Awards Ratings

It's my understanding that the ratings for CBS' telecast of the Tony's were about the same as last year.

And that is actually a major disappointment. With the Tony telecast not facing an NBA playoff game on another network for the first time since 1990, I fully expected last night's (June 5th) Tony telecast to have attracted more viewers than any Tony show in recent years.

Based on Marc Berman's Programming Insider newslatter on Mediaweek.com (you will need to click-on the link by Tuesday morning to read Monday's edition, which included the weekend ratings), while the Tony's on CBS drew about the same number of viewers as last year, and Fox actually drew more viewers than the first Sunday night in June a year ago, ABC, NBC and the WB all drew far fewer viewers last night than the first Sunday of June, 2004. This leads me to think that a lot of people may have stayed outside last night until 11 P.M. EDT!

This is a link to Zap 2 It.com's report on prime-time ratings for June 5th, although not as detailed a report as Marc Berman's Programming Insider column.

Re: Tony Awards Ratings

You would expect Fox to attract the lowest intelligence denominator. So, that is no surprise. H.L. Menchen may have been a bastard and a raving anti-semite but he was right when he said that "you will never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the average American."

Afraid the Tony Awards are the last gasp of narrowcasting on commercial television.

Didn't part of the awards show play on PBS in the past? It wouldn't be the end of the world if the program headed to PBS full time or moved on to E! Seems like a better fit than CBS. Maybe TNT or another superstation would take it? SAG awards was on a superstation, I can't remember which, and they did a good job.

Just a random comment.

Re: Tony Awards Ratings :BRAVO ???

If BRAVO were to live up to its original commitment to be the "cultural" cable source the Tony Awards would have done well to be at least simulcast there.

PBS aired at one time the more backend awards starting an hour before the CBS telecast. PBS would be a good fit if they could find some corprate sponsor or sponsors.
