Tony Cortez exits Energy 94.1

One of the best local personalities is out at 94.1. No reports on why the departure. Tony was the Afternoon Drive Time ost and Assistant Program Director.

Maybe a format change is on it's way.

There have been so many staff cuts at radio stations recently though, they're saving money because FM radio is less popular than it was just 10 years ago...

Let's not exaggerate. While radio time spent listening is down, the reach of radio compared to 20 and even 30 years ago is nearly the same.

Radio's biggest issue is financial: high prices paid in the first 5 to 8 years of consolidation, and debt that is hard to service without trimming costs.

They should just make Energy like The Box in Houston and then an urban station can compete with The Beat's rhythmic stuff.

The Box is an urban station, primarily targeting African Americans. The Beat is a rhythmic station primarily targeting SA's 51% Hispanic population. The two markets have different ethnic compositions and different format needs.

What's interesting is that Dana Cortez left 98.5 to start at a new radio station August 20th. The only current station she could land at is 94.1. Unless, Cox or Iheart are making changes????

From Mysa.com:

The show will leave 98.5 and launch on a new station Aug. 20, though what that station will be hasn't been revealed yet.

Someone in SA has the scoop on Dana and Tony....

It was announced today that the show will be syndicated nationally, and not just on one specific station.

From Tom Taylor Now:

Dana Cortez becomes “one of the first Latinas to host a nationally syndicated show”- especially one that’s targeted at CHR, rhythmic and hip-hop stations. She and her cast recently left mornings at Univision’s rhythmic “98.5 the Beat” KBBT in San Antonio and now we know why – “The Dana Cortez Show” is the first project from the new “joint syndication and sales initiative” between ABC Radio and Skyview Network.

That was my original post, that Dana would remain at 98.5, but the reporting on mysa made me think twice.

Let me guess she will end up at 94-1 and 94-1 will go all hip-hop?

I still say they go Urban. Lots of people I know aren't African American, they're White and some are Hispanic and still like bumpin' explicit rap music. They could call it "94-1 The Nuisance", playing everything that will annoy people who don't like rap music. I know they aren't allowed to play explicit stuff because the FCC doesn't allow it. But with all the corruption going on in radio these days will the FCC even notice?

Heck, or they could move oldschool rap to 94-1, and flip G103-3 to Reggae, for those people who don't like cigarette smoke in their rooms. LOL #random
Really though some of the new/semi-new Reggae from Stephen Marley and others is pretty good.

"Corruption"?

That's a strong, non-specific, accusation that is very offensive to those of us who work in radio and have made careers, raised families and accumulated many friends also in the business.

So I am calling you on that statement: please give your specifics or apologize.

Sorry, David.
I meant all the "Cesar Guel" stuff that has been posted on these forums previously. If Guel isn't corruption, I stand corrected.

Are Tony and Dana related? Noticed the exact same last name, but Cortez is common.
