ToNY is Gone

KRTH and KLUV run a 50's 60's based oldies format on their HD channels. It would be nice if CBS would use it. Running WCBS AM on both their subchannels is a waste. Hopefully, it is only temporary.

That ToNY format was bland..stuff you could hear anywhere.

I am one of the few people in NYC with an HD radio. This is wishful thinking, but I hope this is temporary and that WCBS-FM HD2 will be a 1955-64 oldies station.

When 101.1 was hijacked in 2005 HD2 became an oldies station. In July 2007 Jack moved to HD2 and was there until the licensing agreement with Sparknet expired. It was rebranded as ToNY with a similar format. One year HD1 was all Christmas music as HD2 temporarily was oldies until 12/26.

Even though there are so few HD radios out there, it will be interesting to see what happens at HD2. It is possible it will continue to simulcast WCBS 880 as a way to save money.

They could just turn off one of the subchannels and put WCBS 880 on HD2.

That's actually one thing I use my HD tuner for quite a bit. WCBS 880 sounds much better on the FM HD subchannel than on AM.

I haven't listened in a good while, but I remember back when the station was simply called "101.1 HD2", it had a pretty interesting, if really unfocused (even by "Jack" standards) mix, with at least some songs you wouldn't hear elsewhere. Perhaps it got more streamlined since then.

This is wild speculation, but I wonder if the demise of "Tony" is related to Lenny Bloch's departure...

This is quite possible since Lenny Bloch was the Assistant Program Director/Music Director at WCBS-FM. I don't know if he had any role in the HD2 station. All the big corporations in the radio business are trying to save money wherever they can.

With ToNY getting out of the way from CBS-FM's HD2 channel, my guess will be the classic CBS-FM on HD2 playing a lot of 1955-63 pre-Beatles songs, just like way it sounded on WGNY's "Fox Oldies" along with the return of the "Doo-Wop Shop". Doo-Wop music was great music but it sounds a bit dated and I would like to see it come back.

WCBS 880 AM is including "HD2" in its hourly ID. So this simulcast apparently took the place of ToNY.
As HD3's are usually talk, perhaps 101.1 HD3 will carry the new CBS Sports Radio Network, once it starts on Jan. 2, if it is not broadcast on a conventional signal such as WFAN 660 AM.
I enjoyed listening to ToNY from time to time, as it was the closest this area had to a Jack format.

ToNY was good... you can't hear Van Halen's 'Dance the Night Away' followed by PM Dawn's 'Set Adrift on Memory Bliss' on many places, but ToNY delivered. *cheers*

Speaking of CBS owned HD2 subchannels, I guess we'll soon hear what will be done with WWFS 102.7 HD2. They have been broadcasting continuous Christmas music. Prior to that they had been simulcasting rather obscure alternative music from LastFM.
CBS has scaled back their LastFM service, due to music licensing costs. So perhaps they will use WWFS HD2 for something else once the holiday music runs its course. I enjoyed the channel when it used to play a wide variety of rock, under the WNEW moniker.
