Tony Lorino Leaves Star 94-1

It didn't take long after the March PPM numbers were released, but PD Tony Lorino has departed Star 94-1. Tony was transferred to Atlanta when Entercom acquired the station in 2015 after taking the company's Hot AC in Kansas City, 99.7 The Point, from the basement to #1 in the demo. I've met Tony, and he's smart, strategic, creative and knows his stuff.

I'm not sure what a new PD could really do with that format. The morning show, Jeff & Jenn, seemed destined for success but hasn't been able to break through. The station's music, formatics and imaging sound good, also.

Making Star's Hot AC format more successful will not be easy. There probably are too many stations targeting the women 25-54 demo.

I've been saying this for a while. Something has to give with all of the various flavors of CHR and Hot AC on the dial.

And I'll compare it again to when Atlanta had six AC stations in the mid-80s (94Q, Peach, Warm 100, Fox 97, B98.5, and Lite 106, plus Z-93 as CHR). Eventually three of them left the format (Fox 97 went oldies, Warm 100 became CHR Power 99 (it helped Power 99 that Z-93 was circling the drain as a CHR before flipping to classic rock), and Lite 106 became country Y106).
