Too good to have been true

Since the start of '11, 106.3 has come in very clear--even sometimes in the car--since last night, a strong pirate has taken away my THUNDER!!!!---Ave H and OCEAN PARKWAY midwood Brooklyn.

This is why pirates should be illegal

Not only "should" pirate radio operations be illegal, they ARE illegal!

I think what Nick meant was that piracy bill should pass in the state of NY. In NJ, it is a felony, and since the governor is in need of money, what a perfect opportunity to get some cash in the Newark and Paterson areas.

You should send an email to Thunder 106 and complain to them about the pirate. It probably won't do much good, but the more people complain the more likely it may be that these guys get shut down, or at least move to another frequency.

Thunder 106's signal is not intended to serve (or cover) New York City. The fact that you got a little bit of signal on the fringe is sheer luck.

As far as anyone else is concerned, 106.3 is an empty frequency in NYC. Fair game for a pirate.

Then what do you call the 104.1 pirate in Queens bleeding through Q104.3 or the 100.1 pirate in Fort Lee,NJ bleeding through Z100 then?

It's not really that smart of an idea to broadcast on signals that are next to ones that are regular frequencies.
I NEVER get pirates where I am.
I mean here are the clear signals by me that aren't used:
93.5
93.7
94.3
95.1
95.9
96.7
97.3
97.5
98.3
99.9
106.3
107.9

Thunder 106.3 has the right to broadcast to NYC, not a pirate.

Thunder 106.3 does not broadcast to New York City nor is it capable of reaching most of the city with any regularity. Pirate or not.

A pirate is a pirate no matter how you look at it. Even when there was a dance format pirate on 92.9 in Trenton, I admit, I enjoyed listening to it, but at the same time, what good is it if it's illegal?

Who cares if it's illegal. Just listen and enjoy it for what it is while it lasts. :)

It's the same as legitimate stations - they're around for a little while until the owner gets bored and decides to do something else.

Apparently they have a pretty good signal on Staten Island since I've heard listeners call into the station from there. Also I'd bet they have a pretty good signal on the south shore of Brooklyn (if there were no pirates). But in Manhattan forget it.

FYI, WKMK, Thunder106.3 was the long time frequency for FM106.3 (WHTG.) It then flipped to Top 40 for a bit and is now doing country, owned by press communications. It also simulcasts @ 106.5.

You're lucky in the Bay Area. I still wonder why pirates are such a huge problem here specifically, and not so much in other major metropolitan areas, or so it seems.

most of the pirates in NYC are rhythmic caribbean/urban oriented and there are many. There must be 15 in Brooklyn alone. Some using the same frequency.
Some of them even run commercials....

Would seem like there is a definate need for a full powered caribbean outlet.
WVIP doesn't seem to cut it.
