Too Little, Too Late?

The other night while watching TV, I saw Mix 107.7 air a TV spot. My guess is that this TV commercial airing was a reaction to the Click TV spots. Sorry Mix, but from where I sit, it's just too little, too late. Just from looking at Facebook, Click is closing in on 4,000 fans. Also, Click has gotten a lot of positive word of mouth, which has lead to its popularity. I am not a Mix hater by any means. All I am saying is that Click has put a huge dent in the armor of WMMX. If I was Jeff Stevens, I would've been on the defense right as soon as Click launched. I would've thrown a TV spot together as fast as I could have, as well as modernize the playlist more, and seriously decrease the 80s in the music library. My guess for Click's first book is at least a 2 or 3. Mix will no doubt fall. How far is anyone's guess. Anyone heard anything?

What does Facebook have to do with it? Show me ratings, and/or show me revenue. *That* is how I determine if a radio station's "popularity."

Facebook is becoming widely used in radio. I think it's a very powerful tool to spread the word about your station and receive feedback on said station. The word of mouth on the street is good. I've gotten a lot of folks that didn't listen to the radio before to try Click and i've heard nothing but good things.
I'm sure Click is doing OK revenue-wise. Ratings-wise? We'll have to wait for that Winter book. The PPM can't get here soon enough(I know, I know, Dayton won't have it for at least a few more years since it's not a Top 50 market).

Yes Facebook is becoming widely used. I am a frequent.....some would say "addicted"....user of it myself.

However, I've seen you post here several times about the "wild popularity" of this Click thing. I'm glad you like it, but you're not offering any concrete facts to back up your claims. You're right..time will tell. Right now..the jury is definitely out.

Do I like Click? Yes, i'll admit, it's my favorite station and #1 on my presets. All that I am saying is that all the word of mouth i've heard has been good...and this is just from folks i've talked to out and about, not on FB. Mix has to be concerned somewhat. I look for them to take a hit in the 25-44 demos the most. Let's just say that Click has made Dayton radio interesting again. Now I wonder who they'll hire for their airstaff. Rumor has it that they're hiring for that very thing at the present time. :eek:

Wouldn't it be ironic if "Click" which prides itself on Facebook popularity had close to no online listeners?

@Alan613
They should hire you as their Marketing Director because you are their number one fan! Alot of Facebook fans in which they ran a contest for people to hit like, translates into Arbitron ratings?? And then you say MIX must be nervous about a Modern Hit Format? Get a life Dude!!!

I have a very good life first off. No reason to insult me on a radio board. Second off, you are underestimating what is happening in Dayton radio. I had the unfortunate experience of listening to Mix while eating last week at a local eatery, and it just sounded OLD and TIRED. Mix has got to stop playing all those moldy oldies from the 80s. Mix should be Dayton's Adult CHR, and instead they decide to try to be some sort of Classic Hits leaning Hot AC. Also, their desperation shows with their horrid group contesting that no one in Dayton has a shot in Hell of winning, and their TV commercial they put together, that leaves out how much they're stuck in the 80s. Mix shouldn't be playing anything from before 1990. Instead of trying to change with the times and the competition, and making their station sound, you know, GOOD, they just stick to the same tired, old, outdated formula while trying to cover up how out of touch they are with lame nationwide contests and lame TV spots. If you don't believe me, try listening to a half hour of Mix and then listen to Click afterwards. Click sounds new, fresh, and exciting. Mix sounds sleepy. Do I like Click? Yes. However, you have to admit that without Click, would Mix have A. Been airing TV spots when they haven't aired a single spot on TV since the 90s, and B. Their horrible attempt at a "CONtest" that promises to give away $1,000 every hour(To other folks out of state), not to mention sending out mass mailings, one of which made it to my mailbox. Mix is scared of Click. If the above isn't enough evidence to scream DESPERATION, then nothing is. Now, the entire board can go back to insulting me just because I stand up for a great, new, fresh radio station instead of the old, tired, crappy station at the end of the dial. Also, someone tell Mix that it's 2011 and not 1981. Now, let the insults continue. :)

I am not a MIX listener but if they were
so sleepy why are they ranked number#1
with Adults & Women 25-54 in the most
recent Arbitron book. You can't program a radio
station on your personal beliefs. I like
click too but it is a flanker radio station not a
spoiler.

ToAlans613 - I for one really enjoyr your insights in local radio. I believe we could have some great radio talk if I could ever find an investor who would buy a loca lstation and have me run it and make money for everyone plus have a hell of a lot of fun running it.

I think Main Line has done an excellent job of making a bang in the market. They frst did it with the Fly. However, if they continue they will only make the intial spalsh and not go to the next level then Click will become like the Fly where it seems to running in place. Main Line told everyone they are abuot having good people and not replacing them when they came in the market. In truth, they were not prepared to take on the Dayton and Louisville at the same time.
Their consultants are weak. They still need a local moring jock on the FLY.

If they really had good consultants they could position WING where it makes money. This is not the thread to dscuss WING but believe me , as I have said before, you can make a lot more money on the station and have that in house to invest in getting the right takent for the Fly and Click.

To Alans613 - please contnuewith your comments. I agree with you a lot of times and at other points disagree but that s what this board is all about.

@Alans613,

Wow dude, Im normally making people mad on this board, but you have taken some of my thunder. I do however agree with you about Click and Mix. Mix is a sinking ship (all hands on deck)!!! Mainline is doing good with it's tv ads and Facebook hits. Oh, and I do believe Facebook can turn into numbers. As it has been stated many times on this very website by many of you, anyone can get an arbitron diary...even Facebook users. Stick to your beliefs Alan and carry on!

Yes FLY needs a moring DJ, Click needs DJs too, but Mix spends way too much time playing show and not enough music that matters. Jeff and Crissy talk way too much about nothing and inside jokes (what a turn off for real listeners), Fake British Guy is getting old and tired. You've been in America longer then you lived in the UK, stop forcing the watered down accent already. Oh, and the Big Afternoon Show? Who cares...shut up and play music!

Sorry Alan, I had to vent....now back to you :)

Pioneer and Doodical, thanks for your support! For some reason there are some serious Click haters on this board. Anyhow, Doodical, you're right on the money on Mix. They're sinking quick. The morning show is beyond bad. The afternoon show I gave up on long ago. From what I understand, Click is currently looking for an air staff.
I was also attacked previously for saying Mix was "Sleepy sounding". I guess since they were #1 in the last survey 25-54 and supposedly with women, that means that they're NOT sleepy sounding. HUH?!? I beg to differ. Mix sounds awful. The 80s are old and tired. I don't care what some on here say, either, the contest and the TV spots are desperation on Mix's part to cover up their lack of fixing their radio station and continuing on with the status quo. Also, I wonder if the folks that are attacking me are Mix employees. Believe me, Mix IS sweating Click. I understand Click is only 6,000 watts and Mix is 20,000, but still, Click can do some serious damage to their demos. Let's also not forget that The X is only a 2600 watt station...and does a 5 share. I look for Click to do some damage to The X as well.
Yes, Fly needs a morning show badly. They should've hired a morning show back in '08 to start with. I'm not sure why they only hired Danielle for middays and not someone for mornings. Things that make you go hmm I guess lol.

All I know is that the 80's March Madness bracket that they did a little while back was one of the lamest things I have heard in a long time....the finalists for that should have been Kristy Leigh's hairstyle vs. the Mix Playlist.

That March Madness 80s bracket was indeed lame. They kept talking about it like it was as important as the actual March Madness bracket. Don't they get that no one gives a crap about 80s music anymore? Lame, lame, lame. Mix is stuck in the 80s. Of course, they continue to be oblivious to what the audience wants...and no, "Saturday Nite Mix" isn't what the audience wants.

Mix should definitely be worried about Click... oh, and Mix is never going to drop the '80s with Jeff Stevens in there.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Click will definitely do some damage. We'll have to wait to see the Spring '11 book to see just how much. As I said in another post, it looks like Main Line made a VERY wise move dumping KC. I can't believe they only did a 1 in their final book. Wow.
With Channel and Lite switching frequencies, we can forget about Mix EVER dropping the 80s. I was hoping that Mix would eventually drop the 80s and possibly become an Adult CHR leaning Hot AC. I still say that this could turn out to be a bad move by CC. They'll just confuse listeners and perhaps kill the heritage AC in town in the process. Maybe that has been the intention all along. Lite will IMO become PC moving to the 94.5 Aloha Trust signal. Paul and Kim will either move to another signal or be let go. I hope it's not the latter.

Alan and I think alike. ;)

The chance of Mix dropping the '80s is slim to none because of Lite moving over to 945. I'm predicting a big change over at "Channel" too.
