Too Many Spots

There are way too many spots on the radio. I was driving to the grocery store and I had to turn my radio off. I have 12 FM Presets. 10 of them were running spots. The 11th - La Fiesta from Long Island wasn't coming in that strongly today and the 12th is NPR, which I only listen to on Saturdays for Car Talk and The Food Schmooze. This is nuts. 10 stations all running commercials at the same time.

FM-1

1. HOT 93.7
2. 102.9 The Big D
3. Country 92.5
4. 98.1 Campus Radio (the experimental ESPN Station that originates from their campus in Bristol)
5. Rock 102
6. WPLR

FM-2

1. 94.3 WYBC
2. La Fiesta 98.5 (From Long Island)
3. KISS 95.7
4. KC 101.3
5. Lite 100.5
6. Connecticut Public Radio

Too many stations trying to make money...

So do you also go to your manager at Walmart to complain about all of the customers in the store?

See Marc,

It's kind of the same principle, both radio and Walmart are in the business of making money.

Any abundance of spots or shoppers can only be a good thing for cash flow, which in turn keeps all parties involved employed.

I think it's just an excuse to show your presets ;D

That happens in a lot of radio markets. I guess they don't want people finding another station to listen to during that time. So just play commericals all at the same time.

Ken, they are not all in cohoots with each other to play ads at the same time. Good grief, Charlie Brown. They play their spots based on the format clocks they use and most of them program their stop sets to get them through the quarter hours to gain more TSL. (time spent listening) I don't know how much you know about radio, but the more quarter hours you get people to listen, the more you time spent listening goes up and so do your ratings. Everyone has been playing this game forever, but now, all the big companies are making their stations play 12-15 minutes of spots every hour now. Back in the "good old days," Most stations played no more than 8 minutes of spots every hour. That's why you're hearing so many. Radio is free so companies have to make their money somehow.

I remember working for a small CT am station about six years ago and the Owner/President of the company held a sales meeting to talk about the upcoming UConn Men's and Women's basketball package. He said the reason the flagship station WTIC Am was expanding the pre and post game shows to an hour was for more advertising. After a while too many commercial become a tune out.
RAB conducted research that revealed some interesting info. For example, Listeners tend to tune out or change stations after 3 units of commercials or promos.
So it's gotten to the point where the programming is filler for the commercials. What a joke! The tug of war between sales and programming is over. The money grubbers have won out!

Sales won like 10 or more years ago, wouldn't you agree? Sell the product and then sell out the product. That's the sales strategy. Who listens for the programming? Don't ask sales. They'll tell you no one.

When I worked at KC over 20 years ago we were running 15 units an hour. Excluding front end promos. And 3 car dealers per break. 1st, 3rd and 5th. Breaks were at :21 :41 and :51. Listeners never complained about too many commercials.
They did complain about the same power songs getting played every 3 hours. LOL

I had a GSM tell us in a Sales Mtg that programs increase in time so more advertising can be sold. Do you really think the average listener wants to hear more Bob Discount Furniture commercials? If you do I have some swamp land in southern Ct
I would like to show you. ::)

Right, Most listeners can't wait for that next commercial break. They agoninize through the music waiting for their favorite commercial to come on the air. NOT!!!!!!!!!

Video, this guy was rude about his response to Marc. Don't feed his ego...you're better than that.

By the way, how does Bob's get away without an infringement inquiry from Mark Goodson Productions?

"Come on down," indeed!

Bob Kaufman is a promotional machine. He floods the market with advertising. The man knows how to promote product.
