Too much sports?

Is there room in Columbus for 3 sports stations? With the addition of Rome and Fox sports plus Mark the Shark seems like the format is getting stretched. Will these stations eat into BNS's audience especially since their signal is so weak? I don't count TVN since they don't actually have sports programming.

I love 'BNS and I REALLY LOVE the Buckeyes, but they (WBNS) need to realize there are more sports in this country other than Ohio State football. I listen to 'BNS for "Mike and Mike' as well as the "Herd", but come on........3 hours of Speilman!!!!!!!!!Thank God we now have Rome, LIVE, till 3 each day; Heck even the replay of Fox's morning show is better than Spielman.
WBNS really dropped the ball when they did away with the Dan Patrick show.

Ted needs to try and either move Mark the Shark to the 1pm slot, or pick up another local host.

1460 is more like "Buckeye" radio and not so much "sports" radio. One of the things I used to love about Ian Fitzsimmons is that he didn't talk about the Buckeyes the ENTIRE time. He hit all the major sports stories nationwide.

Shark on Sports is proving to be pretty entertaining. Yesterday they had Ron Hainsey from the Blue Jackets as a co-host. That was VERY interesting. Mark acts like he cares about more than just football which is a welcome change of pace. A 2 hour glimpse inside the life of a professional hockey player is way more entertaining than yet another day of Buckeye talk.

I love the Buckeyes too. '97 OSU alum. But there is more to sports world than the Scarlet and Gray.

So anyway, as long as 1460 sticks with Buckeye-talk, I think we really have a good mix here now. No other dedicated sports talk station but 2 others that fill a void. I can pop around my dial at different times of the day and get the best programming.

I think Mark the Shark has a great show. I wonder if Nabco will promote it at all. They advertised the heck out of the Grego Show and that piece of crap is in the toilet, right where it should be.

Nabco may promote it...they promoted Bob & Tom when they signed them on and the Grego show as well. Shark is very talented. Unfortunately, I don't see them spending the money to get him a producer to screen calls, book guests, keep the show moving, etc. I hope I'm wrong because his show is a great alternative to 1460.

Biggest question is can they sell it? Is there room for Nabco to make money selling sports in this town without having a property like OSU? And since Rome failed once will he be sellable for Clear Channel?

I still say the thing they need to do is either get the rights to the Destroyers games, Clippers games or some other major sports team. May be the only way they can make it. P.S. Love Sharks show. Like previous post said, better than 'BNS!!!

If they are smart they grab the rights to the Clippers now while they are still at the Coop and when they move downtown and the buzz/interest about them grows, they already have the rights.

'BNS has a stranglehold on the Jackets and the Buckeyes but it would be nice for TDA to get Clippers, Destroyers, Crew, Cavs maybe, Bengals, god-forbid the Steelers (although Shark being a Cleveland apologist maybe he would try to get that not to happen :) others?

They could be the broadcast home of the all non-Buckeye sports.

The Clippers would be a perfect fit!

Maybe they can the rights to the Crew from the Brew.

(Does ANYbody listen to Hockey on radio?)

Why would C.C. want to give Jim Rome's sports talk show a second chance in this market when he failed here the first time when he aired on 1230-AM from 2001-2003?? Is he more popular now??

This is what Tim Feran had to say about him a few years ago when he moved from WBNS-AM
to his new on 1230-AM.

NOTE, THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST THREE PARAGRAPHS of this ARTICLE:

NEW FORMAT SEEKS POINTS IN GUY ZONE

"Say goodbye to FYI. Get ready to hit "the Zone." Starting today, WFII (1230 AM) -- FYI 1230 -- is dropping most of its current lineup in favor of new shows and a new name, WZNW -- Talk 1230, the Zone."

"The move will coincide with the start of Jim Rome's sports talk show on the station, said WZNW and WTVN (610 AM) program director Steve Konrad."

"Rome had been a fixture at WBNS (1460 AM), but his show is syndicated via Premiere Radio Networks, a subsidiary of WTVN and WZNW owner Clear Channel Communications. As long as Rome aired on WBNS, he competed against his own company."

I think this is not the real issue here. Did Jim Rome fail or did "The Zone" fail? Jim Rome did not fail on 1230 IMHO, The whole format failed. They tried to build the whole station around him and it just didn't work. Now they have a different formula where Rome is one piece of the whole puzzle instead of the whole thing.

Man.....If 'TDA had only acted a little earlier and maybe have got Rome.......who knows!!!

Actually, the cavs are already on 1230 and I think the Bengals are on WTVN still. I heard a promo for the cavs on WTVN for 1230 the other day. Are the Browns still on the fox, or Z-Country, Brew, or whatever it's called these days? I remember a few years ago the Reds being on 610, but I think they're on 1230 too. Someone told me Bowling Green games were on 1230 this season. The question of "WHY?" came to mind to me. BG football? On a progressive talk station (at that time)? Oh well... a lot of sports on the radio for a town with no real professional sports teams (I can't include NHL or MLS)...

You are right on all accounts. Browns are on The Brew, Cavs are on 1230, Reds I think are 1230, Indians are 1460, Bengals on 610, Buckeyes on 1460, Blue Jackets on 1460.

You're right, I can't see the Browns moving from 105.7 to 103.9 unless CC drops them (and Columbus being a Browns town, I don't think they would do that).

I think 'TDA needs to pick someone up. The Clippers might be the only "brand" available and the stock is low now. I really do expect it to be a more valuble commodity in 2009 when they are in the new stadium. The question is, will Talk FM survive until 2009.

There's always the Destroyers whose radio home was The Big Wazoo. Don't know if they are still gonna be on Wink or not but I am guessing not.

Can't imagine very many sponsor $ out there for Clippers and Destroyers. Even the Crew can't command many dollars as evidenced by it's play by play moving all over the dial. Bottom line still rules. 1460 even with the Buckeyes has tiny ratings. How will the other formats make it?
