Too Pitiful To Listen To

No matter what format, I think it's sad to see heritage stations in any market go slowly down the drain. And what a mess KIRO has become.

The morning show has been and is well done. Solid, reliable and entertaining enough to keep things informal without trying to be a yuckfest.

Dave Ross is okay. He sounds like an aged uncle at a party who knows something is going on but isn't quite sure what. But he gamely tries to hip him self up. I'm pleased the lameoid satirical Weird Al songs are pretty much gone but it's still gagging to hear the "stand by" he uses 12 times an hour, like he's channeling Walter Winchell from 1932. And the "one listener at a time" delivered in the nasally pseudo-baritone is equally annoying. But overall, he's okay. He has some interesting guests and will sometimes dig in and throw a fast ball or two.

What can be said about Dore that he hasn't already said about himself? If there is a Seattle talk guy with a voice higher, muffled and more strident - tell us all. He sees himself as Seattle radio's Most Machismo Mic Wrangler - reality is more like Mr. Peepers with a lungful of self-promotion.

Ron & Don? Sweet God. Dear, merciful, sweet God. Anything that can get me to actually listen to Mark Levin is powerful in its awfulness.

And now Luke Burbank. What a great idea for a show. We'll get two thirty-somethings whose idea of brilliance is the ability to toss out cultural in-references like the bastard children of Dennis Miller, give them no constraints so they can yak unimpeded about their weight, favorite TV shows and onandonandon. I've tried. I've listened and wanted to like it but I think I'd rather have me ears ripped off by the Discovery Park coyote than hear one more smarmy, self-possesed verbal smirk. If it's possible to be even worse, it occured a few weeks back when Burbank was in absentia and the gal pal tickle and grinner girl filled in. Hours of her full-on Valley Girl choked throat type of talking actually gave me a headache. But I tried.

On the plus side -

Frank Shiers gone. No more Mr. Passive Aggressive.

Carl Jeffers gone. Does that guy EVER shut up? Never heard anything like him. And that's not a complimented.

Brian Styble gone. There is no broadcaster in the history of the medium more affected or more possessed by verbal tics than this guy.

More Tony Minor. Good, solid work. In fact, nearly all the KIRO news folks are good except a couple of the guys with extremely high voices. No names because they can't help it but some of those high pitched guys really hurt the ears.

Not that many years ago, KIRO was a powerhouse. It is a ghost of its former self today. I'm hoping for a new pretender to the throne to emerge.

Nice to see a post about a station other than MOVIN, KISS or END. I have to disagree on multiple levels.
Since the Bonneville take over KIRO has sounded more upbeat in production and delivery. On the two biggest points the station is truly back on top. They were number two in billing in the market, up substantially in 2007 over 2006. They could be number one this year. In ratings they have been going straight up since changes were made in August of 2007. December saw the morning show #5, both mid-day shows number 3 and afternoons #2 in the market 25-54. Not an isolated month but six straight up months. The only shift that was not performing was nights, which may be why they are trying the new night show.

On every level including billing and ratings, KIRO is back to being a top five station and maybe number one again in the Seattle market. Not exactly a station "going down the drain," at least when it comes to numbers.

DJDAN - It's just my opinion and the post reflects a lot of pent up bile. In particular, I detest the Luke Burbank style of delivery and the anemic content. I was unfamiliar with him when I heard he'd been hired. I'm not a huge NPR nut but I listen often and was expecting something along the lines of the "Wait ... Wait" crew or "This American Life" only Seattle-centric and was truly amazed as I heard this "show" unfold. I'll be even more amazed if it lasts beyond 2008.

I'll take your word on the revenue stats. I have no desire to see KIRO in any kind of difficulty. On the contrary, I'd like to see it thrive as an outlet for multiple views and not the Johnny One Note of KVI or KTTH.

Anyway, I've calmed down a bit. The medication helps. And, as cliche as it might be, time will tell if KIRO can sustain the numbers you've posted.

Yes mamma, you're right again, we all just care about Movin'.

I used to think the mamma posts were kind of funny in an annoying one note sort of way.

The last post above? Just really really weak. Movin' is a badly run, on the cheap, poor excuse of a station that wastes bandwidth. We like to talk about it here because we as humans like to talk about war, car crashes, and Britney Spears. KOMO and KIRO are "boring" because they succeed in billing, resources, listenership and production values. Because the people running those station have some pride, we on this board are left to pick on individual programming moves at 710 and 1000. But I feel we can all agree the overall they are both successful in service to the community. 92.5 is a joke. Mamma can't even write a basic sentence, and if he or she typifies a Movin' listener god help an advertiser on 92.5. Unless the advertiser is Sylvan Learning Center.
