Toon Disney to become Disney XD in February

Great. Another worthless cable network. I wish they would relaunch it as Disney Channel-2 (or Disney Channel Classics) and show old school Disney Cartoons and old school Magical World of Disney Movies. (Funny I was just having this conversation with a co-worker yesterday over a pair of Chip and Dale PJs, which she told me her mother bought her for Christmas.

TMI!

I said in another topic that Disney should just take ABC Family which isn't really family and make it Teen Disney kind of like what Nick has which is The N. ABC Family was more FAMILY when it was FOX Family Channel.

Is there any chance that anything Disney will appear on the digital subchannels of the ABC Network? Does ABC have any plans at all for the digital subchannels?

What does "target boys" mean? Continuous Goofy cartoons?

Like the Jetix shows. My boys will enjoy Disney XD while my daughter will want to watch the "girl" shows on the Disney channel.

Disney Channel doesn't have a full day's worth of programming ... geez. I think they show each of their original series at least 3 times a day, not counting the Playhouse Disney hours.

I like how they want Disney Channel just for the girls and Disney XD for the boys. Couldn't they just make Disney for boys and girls. Nick attracts both girls and boys?

As for classic Disney cartoons, Walt Disney needs find a place to put the classic cartoons; Chip and Dale, Talespin, and the classic Disney cartoons with Mickey, Donald, etc. Disney Cartoon TV

And do the same for Nick as their Nick Toon doesn't show classic Nick Toons either. No Rugrats, Doug, Cat Dog, etc. Take back the former channel and just add a new channel and call it Nick Too.

I think they would love to, but Pat Robertson required them to keep "Family" in the name after he sold it to Fox (who sold it to Disney) in order to keep every single carriage agreement which keeps it on analog basic. If they drop it, the carriage agreements are nullified; they have to start all over again with zero households. Pat also required them to keep airing the 700 Club and a CBN fundraising telethon as part of the agreement.

This is why they say A new kind of family as their slogan; they're trying to put as much distance away from the Maniac Mansion and Big Brother Jake days of FAM as they contractually can.

I remember back in the day when it was just The Family Channel (FAM) used to watch Inspector Gadget back in the day on that channel. Then Nick picked up the cartoon soon after FAM dropped it.

Just to add why doesn't CBN just buy the whole network. As I am sure if CBN had their own network they wouldn't still use ABC Family. Then i am sure if CBN did they the network would be moved to digitial cable or to the lower channel numbers.

Both former Nick shows; "Doug" and "Allergia's Window" have found their way onto MTV3 to help fufill the E/I requirement of their OTA partners.

Disney has already farmed out the TV rights of their pre-2000 live action library (most of it anyway) to Time Warner for use on TBS, Turner Classic Movies, and the HBO channels. Perhaps we'll see Mickey and friends on Boomerang in the very near future?

Because while boys and girls share some viewing, there is room for shows designed for both groups separately. That would seem to be fairly obvious to anyone with children, who knows children or who has ever been a child. Those differences become more and more pronounced as you move up the age scale.

Yes, Nick attracts both--but don't think for a second "Diego" doesn't have more boys watching than "Dora." Disney is simply taking a different approach to reaching a similar (not identical) audience.

Who knows, they may do that someday. But for now, do you think a company that has a pretty solid track record of business smarts wouldn't be putting their efforts behind the more profitable venture?

CBN used to own The Family Channel. They're the ones who sold it to FOX/Hiram Sabam (sic).

That's just what we need...another Zach and Cody channel, while Disney Regular plays nothing but "Hannah Montana" 24/7. We'll probably never see Donald Duck cartoons on Disney ever again! And "Doug" and "Allegra" on MTV 3? You mean theres 3 MTV's that don't play music videos?

It makes sense for Disney. I'm sure many people new to Disney Channel or cable TV expect them to be airing classic Disney movies and series. But that's not how it works today. Cable TV is all about original programming and competing with broadcast networks.

It would be nice if Disney could launch a "Vault Disney" or Disney Classics channel, like Boomerang for Cartoon Network. But right now the trend is against launching new cable channels, so it would probably be unlikely in the near future.

Only because you're probably over 14 years old. ::)

Yet "The 700 Club" and its telethons are seen on just about every Christian network in the world. And no doubt stations owned by Max Media (rumored to be owned by Pat's son, Tim), does its part as well. (Though if there's any consolation, WGTU viewers in Northern Michigan will finally get to watch NBA basketball instead of the telethon this year.)
