TOP 10 CABLE NETWORKS THAT GAINED VIEWERS IN 2010

From TV BY THE NUMBERS

AUDIENCE GAIN (daily avg.) 2010 vs 2009

1. HISTORY +113,000
2. Investigation Discovery +112,000
3. Adult Swim +86,000
4. ESPN +79,000
5. Nick At Nite +77,000
5. TNT +77,000
7. Disney +68,000
7. Nick Jr +68,000
9. Nickelodeon +67,000
10. MTV +64,000

other gainers in order: #11 Cartoon, E!, HGTV, Travel, Nick Toons, TNNK (what's that), Science.
WGN America, Bravo, History International, TV Land, Animal Planet, Galavision, Military,
Weather Channel

TNNK is Teen Nick (or TeenNick, or teennick, I'm not sure how they display it). Is it uncommon to see children's/teen networks among the audience leaders?

It's not difficult to recognize the youth-oriented slant here.

History used to be my overall favorite until their programming got too repetitive. Virtually all their programming is available via DVD (or direct purchase) so if there is anything I REALLY want to see and can't find it elsewhere buying or renting it is a much cheaper option than the $600-700 it costs per year for cable.

They are rated as separate networks per the request of the networks. I agree it's silly.

Ask yourself why the ratings exist. They're not for our benefit as viewers, as interesting as they can be to follow. They're for the purpose of selling ads...and even though "Cartoon Network" and "Adult Swim" might both show up on channel 342 on my cable, they're completely separate platforms as far as advertisers are concerned. My kids watch a lot of CN and Nick, and I'm pretty sure most of the advertisers buying time during the day on those networks have no interest in the audience tuning to those channel numbers later at night for Nick @ Nite or Adult Swim.

7 of those networks are owned by Viacom (with Nick at Nite said as a seperate network)
Nick seems to have done well when they split up Noggin (now know as Nick Jr.) and The N (now know as Teen Nick) They seem to dominate the kids audience. Could be why were seeing new networks come in like Hub and Disney's coming soon kids network to take Soap Nets place.

Also 4 of those networks are owned by Discovery Networks (Military, Science, Animal Planet, ID Discovery)

VH1 wasn't on the top 20. Which others didn't make it?
I don't see "SyFy" formerly "The Sci-Fi Channel".

SyFy is on the loosers list.

So, if you add in Adult Swim and Nick@Nite, it looks like Cartoon Network and
Nickelodeon would be at the top.

What's more, the 'timeshare' cable channels are far from unprecedented. BET first launched as a two-hour Friday night block on USA Network 30+ years ago.

...and that was when USA itself shared time with C-SPAN...
