Top 40 in Boston

With four Top Signals, WJMN, WODS, WBMX and WXKS-FM, and CC and CBS each owning two, is there any possibility that one of these will likely go to another format? If so, which of the four would it be? CBS has more options simply by owning four FMs and may be more inclined to hold on to the formats that they currently have. Could CC change Jam'n 94.5 to something else, possibly going towards more of a male orientated format in the future and keeping Kiss-108 for the female audience? If WHBA produces some good numbers at 101.7, could CC move that to the much better 94.5 frequency to go for more market share there?

I think if anything jamn 94.5 will change cause Wods is more upbeat then kiss and is newer but then again boston wouldn't have a hip hop station anymore

Or... Jam'n 94.5 could ACTUALLY be a hip-hop station--get rid of the teeny-pop stuff and go more urban.

Like Hot 93.7 Hartford...that station is so GREAT..

Right now, WJMN seems to be the station being affected the most by AMP. There's probably a lot of sampling going on between 103.3 and 94.5. I'm sure CC won't me making any major changes right away. The LAST thing they want to do is skew more urban. The minority audience is still not large enough to cater to exclusively, and the sad reality is that agencies would rather buy "rhythmic" radio that targets suburban kids as opposed to "urban" radio catering to blacks, Hispanics, and other minorities. If CBS is able to build a decent cume on AMP like they've done in other markets, they're in it for the long haul as well. Like with WEEI and the Sports Hub, the battle between Kiss, Jam'n & AMP is going to be a long one.

I think its a little premature to see how AMP will affect the ratings here in Boston. Maybe when the October book is out and we see that WJMN/WXKS are loosing steam, then CC should make attempts at changing things. No need to lean WJMN urban as they will lose the billing. Even if they get hit hard, switching to a more urban leaning format shouldn't even be an option.

WJMN Total Cume has been steady the last couple of years. AQH is usually between 5.5 and 6.5.

you what i was listening to hot 97 bostons pirite station and that station is awsome there very urban and i wish boston could bring it back the old hot 97boston

That would make a lot of sense since both markets have similar demo's. Which means it will never happen.

Similar demos? Don't think so. Hartford is 20% black and Hispanic. Boston is 13%. Big difference.

Here's a little clue in about WZMX. CBS uses it as a "flanker" station. It's designed to keep Clear Channel CHR WKSS in check so that CBS's FM cash cows...WTIC-FM and WRCH, stay at the top of the ratings pile. Despite it's historically high ratings, Hot 93.7's billing is among the lowest of the Hartford FM's.

Unless you live in a market that is at least 35% black/Hispanic, urban radio struggles to sell spots. Agencies just don't want to buy it except in minority-heavy markets where it's unavoidable. Small markets and the pirates, who sell to mom and pop businesses are a different story, but when you're dealing with the majors, urban radio only works in certain places. Boston just isn't one of them.

Your right, but if you look at both markets the radio landscape is pretty much the same. A lot of rock and hot ac a token country and a token hip hop station. We have already seen Amp take a little bite out of Jamn. Why not skew it a little bit more urban. They have done it before and they wiped 977 WILD off the face of the earth.

Agreed---- WJMN needs to go more urban- Soca, Reggaeton, hip-hop..... That would be great---- WPOT was awesome until they went off the air!!!
