Top 40 Radio Back in the Day, circa 1985

Here are a few more airchecks to compare: I have hours and hours of scoped Boston CHR airchecks from 81-85.
WHTT-Jay Dowd 1984
WZOU-Harry Nelson 1987
WXKS-Jojo Kincaid 1984
WZOU Hot Hits jingles from September 1984 There are plenty of Jim Cutler voiced promos where those airchecks came from!
Here's a link to my aircheck library which lists them all

WOW, IMPRESSIVE collection! 8)

140 WHTT 9/8/1984 Willie B. Goode-Jeremy Savage-Alex Stone-Doug Alling various

I forgot ALL ABOUT Willie! ;) He was a GREAT Top 40 jock from the 80's!

And Retro, it appears it was Alling with an "A", now I am all confused!! :p

listening to the Jay Dowd aircheck now, GREAT stuff... 931-1616 WAS the request line... but whenever I would call it, it would just ring and ring and ring... :(

LISTEN to that reverb during the sports scores! ;D

GREAT jingle package, the best in Boston at the time IMO, and that Peter Wolf drop is AWESOME.

hothitsdx (Steve), is there any way that you can answer the question someone else had earlier in this thread: Is the Alex Stone we all remember from HTT in fact the Alex Stone that does field reports for ABC News nowadays?

I was actually one of the personalities on WKKT when they did Top 40 for a few months under the name Tony Mathes. That was a fun time but when WZLX came along it was a welcome change and I stayed on and did midday's for about 4 years.
A GREAT TIME.
GREAT STAFF.
EXCITING to debut a new format that was in it's infancy.

Its too bad that WKKT never really caught on, however love it or hate it, WZLX really did make a profound impact in radio for the area. ;)

"The Cat"! (or was it "Kat"?)

I believe the first song they played was "Year Of The Cat" by Al Stewart...

Can someone refresh my memory on what was on 100.7 BEFORE the flip to KKT?

Wasn't it WHUE? I do not know what the format was at all.

As I remember WHUE, the format was "Beautiful Music/Easy Listening".

Mainly instrumental orchestral soft pop, what was then called "elevator music".

In between WHUE and WKKT, 100.7 was very briefly WCOZ for only about one week in December 1984, playing the "Beautiful Music" as "Cozy 101".

Before becoming WHUE, 100.7 was AOR (leaning country-rock/southern-rock, with lots of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, Charlie Daniels, etc...) when it was WTTK "TK-101" from late 1976 through 1978.

Before becoming WTTK, 100.7 had it's original call letters WCOP-FM, the sister station to WCOP-AM 1150. WCOP-FM had been many formats over the years including classical, standards, easy listening, oldies, and country (simulcast from the AM) to name a few.

Now that would make sense. I distinctly remember hearing the Kinks Destroyer on a frequency near there once. It surely would have to have been an AOR type of format.

Do any airchecks of these various formats of 100.7 exist? I've seen them discussed in detail on various boards over the years, but have never actually heard any audio from them.

They were mostly automated. I don't think people had much interest in recording them at the time, because there were very few, if any, air personalities (except when they were simulcasting the AM).

answer to question of Alex Stone and WKKT

I never thought that was the same Alex Stone until I listened to this jingle talk up about 20 times:

WHTT-Alex Stone talks up :30 jingle

Alex Stone was kind of "choppy" on HTT and made a lot of "stuttery" mistakes. His energy was great and he matched the station, but he didn't sound as polished as Doug Alling or his competitors Jojo Kincaid and Jon Rock and Roll Anthony, who were by far part of a group of the best night jocks in America.

We run ABC News on the Cape at WXTK. I will call affiliate relations on Monday and double check though. I too asked that question to myself.

As for KKT, (answer to Jeff), it was kind of a Hot AC/CHR hybrid with tons of recurrents. My favorite jock was Lee Gillette who I believe has passed on since. I do have audio and will post soon.

Steve
BTW. Does anyone have any audio of Mike Joseph Hot Hits stations 1977-1984 including WTIC-Hartford, WFBL-Syracuse, WCAU-Phioadelphia, WBBM-Chicago, WMAR-Baltimore, KITS-San Francisco, WNVZ-Norfolk? I'm still collecting at Steve McVie.com

I believe Doug Alling is doing weather for a TV station in PA or at least was. It seemed every time I tuned into HTT he was on.

Wasn't Alex Stone also on V66?

Thanks for the followup, Steve. I look forward to hearing about what you uncover...

Also I neglected to thank you for sharing those wonderful airchecks with us. It is much appreciated! :)

You know what I was just thinking wouldn't it be great if someone reading this who personally knows either Alex Stone or Doug Alling would tell them about this thread... then they register here and chime in on this thread! 8)

I'm sure they would have some great stories to tell about the old HTT and radio /broadcasting in general.

I remember when Limahl formally of the band Kajagoogoo visited WHTT. They played Never Ending Story during the interview, but the record was warped. Then the DJ at the time (with a better copy) said to the callers "ok, lets see if we can get this song into the Top 10 at 10 tonight for Limahl!" Later that evening, I believe it made #4 most requested of the day.
