Top 50 Market 60s/70s stations

Anyone know where I might find a list of FM stations in the Top 50 markets playing 60s music as a respectable portion of their playlist? I know Chicago has WLS, and I know back home in Sacramento they have KCCL. I also know KLUV in Dallas is about 25% 60s which is not too bad compared to many Classic Hits stations. But I'm curious how many other Top 50 markets have stations still playing a regular rotation of 60s music, if any.

I just played "My Girl" on K*LUV a few minutes ago...it STILL sounds good!
;D

This website has a section on radio ratings. Same for www.insideradio.com. There are ratings for each market and a format identifier next to each station's call letters. Just look for stations that are identified as "Oldies" or "Classic Hits."

Of course, you will run into the problem I've discussed before that there are really TWO classic hits formats. Originally Classic Hits refered to stations that play pop-leaning Classic Rock. They still play The Eagles, Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, The Stones, Tom Petty, etc. but they choose the more pop-leaning songs from these artists. The DJs don't talk over the music, there are no jingles, no Motown, no intense contests.

Then there's the Classic Hits format that is basically an Oldies station which has deleted the pre-Beatles music and added compatible 80s hits. They play plenty of Motown, have jingles, have DJs doing contests over the song intros.

So in markets like Tampa or Hartford, you have the Oldies/Classic Hits station (WRBQ, WDRC-FM) and you have the Classic Rock/Classic Hits station (WXGL, WHCN). In a case like this, you'd have to go to their website or www.yes.com to see which Classic Hits format each station is running.

In Hartford, WDRC-FM is definitely oldies/classic hits, with a couple of dozen pre-Beatles hits (Elvis, Holly, Haley, Berry -- technically, even "Louie Louie" is pre-Beatles in the U.S.) sprinkled in, but I've never bought into WHCN as a classic hits station. They play way too much '90s/'00s/current. Here's their playlist for 6 p.m. Monday:

Photograph -- Nickelback
The Way It Is -- Bruce Hornsby
Renegade -- Styx
Angel Eyes -- Jeff Healey Band
Who's Crying Now -- Journey
Squeeze Box -- Who
Here Without You -- 3 Doors Down
One Thing Leads to Another -- Fixx
Hey You -- Pink Floyd
Eleanor Rigby -- Beatles
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For -- U2

Now, the same hour on DRC-FM:

I'm a Man -- Spencer Davis Group
Heart of Glass -- Blondie
Mandy -- Barry Manilow
Love Is All Around -- Troggs
They Don't Know -- Tracey Ullman
Band of Gold -- Freda Payne
I Honestly Love You -- Olivia Newton-John
I Saw the Light -- Todd Rundgren
Two Hearts -- Phil Collins
Sister Golden Hair -- America
Love Me Do -- Beatles
Joy to the World -- Three Dog Night
Still the One -- Orleans
Mr. Tambourine Man -- Byrds
Baby Love -- Supremes
Hooked on a Feeling -- Blue Swede

Preferred playlist, wide range, 60's thru 80's & good choices! Even some forgotton artists, like Barry Manilow, Olivia and Blue Swede!

It's a nice little station that definitely has its own approach to the format. Check out the yes.com logs every weekday at noon and you'll find some really unusual stuff getting spins on the request hour, and the 7-11 p.m. hours Monday through Thursday are all themed ('70s at 7, '80s at 8 but only a half hour, Top 9 at 9 -- by year, artist, common word in title etc.; twin spins at 10) and a lot of interesting titles are dusted off during those hours. "Black Pearl"? "New York, New York"? "Positively 4th Street"? Yup. Too bad Buckley Radio has a policy against streaming live audio; they pulled their streams in April 2001 when the AFTRA money grab (for streaming commercials voiced by unionized talent) got going and never brought them back.

When I read the above post, I thought for a second someone had stumbled upon my internet station..I've been running a format similar to this for about two years. Music from '63 through '93..double plays, nine at nine, a syndicated Beatle Break twice during the 6 hour show. Just a plaything for me live on Friday nights from 6 til midnight. No real promotion..just word of mouth from friends and other radio folks. have over 6,000 hits in the two years, a following of 50 or so listeners..and a real time audience of about 20 or so on during the show..most of which log into the chat board and have a good time. The shows are archived each Friday, and can replayed all week...here's the link to the first three hours if you'd like to sample it. you may have to reload the page once it opens to start the stream...classic spot breaks are on the 20's...you can move the progress bar to fast forward. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/12781995

Maybe they have been listening to you! DRC-FM does a four-song "Fab Four at 4" block every weekday at 4 p.m.

This weekend (except for tonight's request show) is all '70s. Played over the last four hours: "Are You Man Enough," "Dirty Work," "Love Is Like Oxygen," "Witch Queen of New Orleans," "Way Down," "Spiders and Snakes," "Hang On in There Baby" and "Share the Land."

My play list is well over 5000 songs..everyone was played on stations back then..some just a mere few weeks ..then gone forever, I took billboards hot one hundred from 63 through 93..i will admit after the late eighties i was a bit selective in what i chose not everything was to my liking...lol and music prior to 63 just doesn't do much for me...with a few exceptions..my core demo is 45 +..with most over 55, But I do have a few 20 somethings that tune in..and they do NOT want the same 300 oldies that radio plays..they're tastes are extremely wide..from little known Joe Cocker tunes to K.D. Lang..for instance they much prefer Etta James version of "At Last" to Beyonce's version....love Ray Charles "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"..as well as all the standard rock tunes most everyone knows...but the show is never boring...music wise..lots of requests every week. And the chat board is like a big family that meet and greet each week..exchange jokes, family info, some have gotten dates..lol...I have regular listeners from as far away as Prudoe Bay in Alaska to southern tip of Florida..Really a fun night and no PD or Consultant telling me what I have to play..lol...I did this for thirty years//I already know what to play..it's not about me...it's about the music..no cover charge..but BYOB ;D
