Top 500 Artists

2. Not so; read my earlier comment about how the board discussed them playing a two-fer from Tone Loc. Maybe if the board wasn't already doing something with their "Rewound" channel this weekend, the thread might have stayed up awhile longer, but the thread might have been taken down, so as not to get sidetracked on their "focus" this weekend?

I heard "Wild Thing" during the Saturday overnight on CBS-FM - I like the song, but something about hearing it outroed by Lenny Bloch just seemed very disjointed. Almost like hearing Dan Ingram on Hot 97 or something....

There it is, played at 3:18 AM on Saturday morning - right after Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" and The Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women." Do you know what this means? This means that, regardless of whatever strings were pulled to eliminate two ballads being played in a row, CBS-FM thinks that Tone Loc is "greater" than the Stones and Elton John!

Oh, and I wonder if they will play "Funky Cold Medina" on the second go-round...

The following hours did not have the "Top 500 Artists Countdown" running on WCBS-FM:

(Countdown started on Thursday morning 5/27/2010 @ 9AM EDT)
Friday Morning 5/28/10 - Midnight-6AM - Voicetracked music
Saturday morning 5/29/10 - Midnight-6AM - Voicetracked music
Sunday morning 5/30/10 - Midnight-6AM - Dick Clark Presents Rewind with Gary Bryan from MID-4AM followed by infomercials from 4-6AM
Sunday evening 5/30/10 - 7PM-Midnight - Dick Bartley's Classic Countdown Show from 7PM-11PM followed by Joe Causi's Classic Dance Showcase from 11PM-Midnight
Monday morning 5/31/10 - Midnight-6AM - Voicetracked music

Thus, Tone Loc didn't make the list.:'( Having said that, I'm a bit surprised only because WCBS-FM has been playing "Wild Thing" as part of specialty shows/segments (& overnights) lately, & "Wild Thing" (along with "Funky Cold Medina") was as big a hit as some of the other one (or two)-hit wonders that appeared on the Top 500 Artists list. It also came out in 1989, so it fits the Countdown, although there isn't a representative sample of the '80's on the list to begin with. Maybe next year - or decade. :D ;)

well, in the world of reality(and the spirit of true Top 40), 77WABC Music Radio SHOULD have been playing Hendrix and ZZ Top at the time of their immense popularity,so it's a reinvented parallel universe...

PJC: Thanks for the info above.

Wouldn't it have been fun if either Dick Bartley or Dick Clark played Tone Loc on one of their shows? ::)

Re: Top 500 Artists Countdown List

Link to the list of the WCBS-FM Top 500 Artists of the '60's, '70's & '80's played over the Memorial Day Weekend 2010:

http://wcbsfm.radio.com/2010/05/27/cbs-fms-top-500-artist-count-down/

Besides the aforementioned "Next" in place of "Jimi Hendrix" goofup, there's a few artists/positions which weren't played in the same order as they appear on the list, just in case your ears remembered something different from what you read on the list. So much for modern technology (probably the Prophet music scheduling software system) over pencil & paper with vinyl/cassette/cartridges. ;)

Note that #488 on the list reads as "Mariah Carey", but should be "Culture Club", as was played on the air.

Plus, Mariah's first hit was "Vision Of Love" in 1990.

I wonder if it's a clue that CBS might just start playing Mariah in the near future...

I'm sure they'll be playing Mariah soon...basically whatever was current on a Hot AC/AC/Top 40 from 1990 on. There's a lot of stuff they could add (Celine Dion would be right in the pocket, too). They just have to wait a few years (5? 10?) until those songs stop receiving heavy airplay on stations like Lite FM, Fresh 102.7, WPLJ & the suburban AC's. Thing is, since there are more music stations now than say, back in the 1970's, there's more material that needs to be programmed. Thus, the turnover in tunes from one generation to the next is a lot slower than back in the day, plus there's somewhat of a sameness to some (not all!) music of the Rock Era - an arguable point, to be sure - that's why we're all here to discuss! Feels like a "Ross On Radio" column... ;)

Funny you should mention "Ross on Radio" today - in his latest issue, he covers why there is no country music station in New York City for nearly ten years. Don't all subscribe at once, now... :)

If CBS is playing Hendrix and ZZ Top, what is there to distinguish Q104 from CBS-FM????

Exactly. CBS FM programming is missing the boat. Clearly. It should be a pop based station, not rock. And Tone Loc doesn't fit. Where are the Jets, Whitney Houston, Pet Shop Boys, Stacy Q, Madonna records?

They have a great brand... use it!

I've heard the occasional Madonna song on CBS-FM, and as previously reported here, they have also played Stacey Q's hit song, as well.

As for the Jets... well, last fall, you had to hear the Giants when conflicting with Mets games. ;D
