1) FERGIE - Glamorous
Best single yet, should be a top 5 hit.

2) LLOYD - You (f/Lil Wayne)
It'll do well, top 15-ish.

3) LUDACRIS - Runaway Love f/Mary J. Blige
Great song, top 10 hit.

4) DIDDY - Tell Me (f/Christina Aguilera)
Great song, but even with the addition of Baby Jane he still doesn't appeal to CHR.

5) GWEN STEFANI - The Sweet Escape
Good, kinda getting tired of it already. Seems to be too forgettable. It'll probably start dropping in February.

6) RELIENT K - Must Have Done Something Right
No.

7) AUGUSTANA - Boston
No.

8 ) CIARA - Promise
Good, but like I said, she's had beter. Top 10.

9) NICKELBACK - If Everyone Cared
You already know what I feel about this band.

10 ) OMARION - Ice Box (f/Timbaland)
Good song, but seems to have nothing special to it. Shuffles into the playlist too swiftly.

11 ) GYM CLASS HEROES - Cupid's Chokehold
Good song, will do better than Queen & I.

12 ) RED JUMPSUIT APPARATUS - Face Down
The Papa Roach "Scars" approach.

See I disagree with the spongebag about the Relient K track. I think their first single was decent, who I am hates Who Ive been and this single, if properly marketed has potential to put them on the map. If you listen to Who I am Hates Who Ive Been you'll notice that they sound just like any of the All American Rejects and Fall Out Boys but now they kind of have their own sound. I think they've tweaked in the right direction in my opinion and I think it's a great Top 40 record. Just hope that a small band like Relient K will get the correct marketing and push on a single like that. Good luck to them.

They've always had their own defined sound... you forget that they've been in the Christian music industry for several years now. They've developed that sound quite a bit over the years, and they're always tweaking it, but the same basic musical elements have always been there.

I'm glad to see them getting some mainstream airplay, much like I was glad to see Switchfoot get mainstream airplay a while back. I've always said that Christian pop and rock music could easily cross over into the mainstream, and I'm glad to see it starting to happen on a regular basis!

Gym Class Heroes - Cupid's Chokehold is another example of what I like to call the "Diddy" syndrome in popular music. It literally lifts its entire chorus from a Supertramp song, "Breakfast In America". I know we're not dealing with a particularly talented bunch, those folks in Fall Out Boy that run Decaydance Records, but apparently they can't even come up with their own ideas.

On another note: So everyone thinks that Gym Class Heroes are the coolest thing to hit music? Seems to me that every one of their songs is essentially a cheesy love song a la Vanilla Ice's "I Love You". God help us if these guys are the future of music or hip-hop.

Couldn't disagree more with this post. I think that you'd have to listen to their entire album to get a full sound/opinion on a band in the first place. And further more, just because they use a Supertramp sample doesn't mean they're completely unoriginal. It's just one song that they used a sample. Tell me a popular CHR artist who hasn't. And what are you talking about with Decaydance Records. It is a sub-label of Fueled by Ramen, possibly one of the most popular rock indie labels avaliable. It's started careers for now huge bands Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and now Gym Class Heroes. It's not my favorite bands coming out but you can't disagree that FOB and PATD are successful right now.

And to add on, not every song of theirs is a "cheesy love song". Again, listen to the full album before making judgments based on what, one song? And "Cupid's Chokehold" sounds like a hit to me. CHR will be all over this.

Sponge, you've got to think like the average listener. First of all, the majority of the audience hasn't heard of Gym Class Heroes. Why would they go out and buy some unknown band's CD? Secondly, first impressions are next to everything in this format. This song isn't one that would have listeners jumping out of their chairs screaming "MORE! MORE! I WANT TO HEAR MORE!" In fact, it's rather atrocious. The vocals are pitchy, there's nothing really catchy in it other than the chorus (which, as was pointed out, is from another song... not really a sample, just lifted lyrics), and even that is pretty dull and unremarkable. Finally, given all that, even if the entirety of the potential CHR-listening public had heard the song, given everything above, why would they go out and buy the album?

The single is the key here. These guys chose the wrong one.

Yeah, but just because a CD doesn't sell doesn't mean the single won't do good (ask Mario, Cassie, Staind...). And the song has a good R&B/rap feel with a dash of rock that reminds you of Linkin Park, Gnarls Barkley, Fort Minor, and the like. Actually I found the chorus more annoying than the verses. And number-wise, it's doing great. Few stations have added the track, but the one that HAVE are adding it like crazy. You can tell because the gain numbers are high and the audience reach is low. If larger markets try it this song will be a pretty big hit. If not it'll still get great airplay at small and medium markets.

First of all, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and Gym Class Heroes are all Tiger Beat pinup fodder as far as I'm concerned. They have nothing to offer anyone over the age of 17. What they put out is pure product, nothing more and nothing less.

I've heard two songs by GCH - the other being "The Queen & I", which can also fall in the love song category. And again, I find it funny that we laughed when Vanilla Ice did it but we're embracing it now.

Still, two songs doesn't judge an album, let alone the band. And "The Queen & I" is a fun dance song about a hangover.

And since when did pure product not work on CHR?

Forgive Mr. SoulCrusher. He has issues with punk and emo bands, and makes sweeping generalizations about them, and then loves to beat a dead horse about it.

Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and Gym Class Heroes = NOT punk and emo. Let me just make that perfectly clear. Punk and emo bands do not have little girls in pink skirts making up the majority of their fanbase, and they certainly don't go whoring themselves on teenybopper shows like FOB is on the Noggin network this coming weekend. They also don't go around dating little pop tarts either, like Pete Wentz has with that trollop Ashlee Simpson. Finally, they don't write songs that sound like Justin Timberlake B-Sides.

Punk = Sex Pistols, The Exploited, Black Flag, Bad Religion, Pennywise, etc.
Emo = Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Jawbreaker, Thrice, Thursday, etc.
MTV Pop = Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, All American Rejects, etc.

The MTV Pop bands really only care about money and fame. And that's fine - they can go off and do their thing. Just don't mix them up with bands that favor artistic expression over sales figures and groupies.

How's the view from your high horse?

People who buy Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco also buy Something Corporate, Taking Back Sunday, and Thursday. Elitists like yourself will not buy an album because the band is "too popular," but the rest of the world WILL buy an album because they like the music. Where do you think Fall Out Boy's new album will place on the Album chart after it's debut? Probably #1, definitely in the Top 10.... and that's not because they "favor sales figures and groupies." That's because they write songs that people want to hear, not because they only care about sales numbers.

We get it. You don't like Emo. Re-writing that in 5000 different ways doesn't change the fact that you post the same thing over and over.

I get the idea of the feel you're trying to describe, but I'm not hearing any correlation between this track and Linkin Park/Fort Minor or Gnarls Barkley. It sounds more to me like an emo band trying too hard to go down the Sugar Ray/LFO route. It just comes across as cheesy.

I'll agree with you on one thing, though: the chorus is downright annoying.

Funny, I'm 22 and the first two bands have entertained me plenty over the past few years. I know plenty of people upwards of 30 who like them as well. Kinda shoots your theory right out of the sky, now, doesn't it?

I'm a 24 year old male... have friends all over the 20s who love the music too. Not just teenyboppers

Well, Z100 is hands down the best CHR in the country; and they play a lot of records. Is everyone of them a hit? No. Is everyone of them gonna make noise nationwide? No. Same goes for every other station in the country.

I see in your analysis that you pretty much base your opinions on a hit of whether you like the song or not. Remember, you are not the demographic. I don't particularly care for some of the songs that I know are hits - but I know they are hits and you have to make your prediction as unbiased as possible, thinking that the average CHR/Pop listener is between 13 and 34 years old, and female. The listeners are what gives us jobs - not whatever we like or care about.

Frankly, very few people in radio care about whether an artist is genuine or not. There are some very talented artists that release great songs.. but to the average listener, they don't click, and they end up not being hits. There are some very talentless artists that you hear all over the radio. Talent isn't for us to judge, that's the record label's job. Our job is to recognize if a release can make an impact and help our case out as a station. If a song's testing well and is a hit, we're gonna play it. If it's not testing well, and it's not a hit, it's not gonna get airplay. Everyone has their own opinions; but the end result is.. what will work? what will the listeners like? what will attract the average listener that has a few choices in the market to stop on my station instead of the competition?
