Top markets - shared frequencies

This is something I’ve wondered about off and on for a while, but never really thought to ask. In NYC, LA, and Chicago, almost all of the “full market” FM signals are on the same frequency in all 3. Just as an example commercially -

92.3
93.1
93.9
94.7
95.5
96.3
97.1
97.9
98.7
99.5
100.3
101.1
101.9
102.7
103.5
104.3
105.1
105.9
106.7
107.5

Detroit and DC/Baltimore generally share these same frequencies as well. Once you get to Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, etc this trend seems to disappear, and definitely in “newer” top markets. Was this a coincidence, or were these initial FM frequencies for large markets at the time that were considered the best? You aren’t going to find a 92.9, 102.5, 98.1, etc in these markets.

for the Dallas/Fort Worth Market:
92.3: None, KZPS 92.5 would block it out.
93.1: K226BM, a translator to KCLE 1460 AM out of Cleburne, also KLIF-FM 93.3 would block it out in some places.
93.9: None, KLNO 94.1 would block it out.
94.7: None, would be blocked out by both KZMU 94.5 & KLTY 94.9
95.5: K238CC, a translator to KVTT 1110 AM.
96.3: KSCS, Big Country 96.3.
97.1: KEGL, 97.1 The Freak (up until earlier this month, was 97.1 The Eagle).
97.9: KBFB, 97.9 The Beat.
98.7: KLUV, 98.7 KLUV.
99.5: KPLX, 99.5 The Wolf.
100.3: KJKK, 100.3 Jack FM.
101.1: WRR, Classical 101
101.9: None, KDGE 102.1 would block it out.
102.7: None, KDMX 102.9 would block it out.
103.5: None, would be blocked out by both KVDT (formerly KESN) 103.3 & KVIL 103.7.
104.3: None, would be blocked out by KKDA 104.5.
105.1: None, would be blocked out by KRLD-FM 105.3.
105.9: None, would be blocked out by KHKS 106.1 (unless you are in Hunt County, then it's K290AP out of Commerce, a translator to KGVIL 1400 AM in Greenville)
106.7: KZZA, La Ranchera 106.7.
107.5: KMVK, La Grande 107.5.

and that's the list of stations for DFW on this list.
