The year is done. Top revenue stations in Seattle will be KISW, KIRO-FM and KPLZ. For the year in total the top station 6a-7p in prime demo was KISW, followed by KUOW and KPLZ. KISW dominated in all male demos, KPLZ in all female demos. Biggest declines from the beginning of the year to the end were KIRO-FM, KKWF-FM and KRWM-FM (not counting Christmas music). Biggest increase in ratings since the beginning of the year goes to KZOK, especially in mornings.
So why do some stations work and some get hurt each year in Seattle? AQH started this on another thread and I'll give it a first shot:
1. Stations that are on top had few noticeable changes but quietly continued to fine tune their brand, adding new elements that go almost unnoticed. (Music on BJ's show, commercials played in different positions, more mainstream content)
2. Stations that dropped in PPM since the beginning of the year saw to radical changes to their lineups and brand. It should be noted that KIRO-FM radically changed its morning product and it has taken a big ratings hit since fall. KKWF's morning show moved out of town and its ratings have been cut in half in many demos and KRWM revamped their entire lineup going into Xmas.
Noticeable change may be bad in PPM, but slow unnoticed changes to adapt to the market may be the key to success. Others comments?
