Top Talk Radio Audiences (as of Fall 06)

Dr. Laura is #4 - her audience numbers have increased and she's still pretty popular, and her show is better than in past years. So much for the death of her radio show. And I am surprized that D. Joy Browne is not higher on the list. Speakiing of Dr. Joy Browne, information on her (age) is nearly nonexistent on the internet. Her show, in my opinion, is good, but Dr. Laura's is better as she is more pasionate in her opinions, and she's really pretty fair, and after regularly hearing her show she's not the mean vixen she's made out to be by the media. Now go take on the day.

Dr. Laura Renaissance?

Dr. Laura Renaissance?

For a long time, I thought Dr. Laura was headed to obscurity; but in contrast, lately I keep seeing her pop up in a lot of mainstream places (that I hadn't seen her before) - which raises the question: Is Dr. Laura having a renaissance?

She seems to have generated a new audience with her recent popular, self-help books:
* The Proper Care & Feeding Of Husbands (recently came out on paperback, NY Times bestseller, I believe).
* Woman Power (follow-up to PC&FH).

Now she is coming out with the "The Proper Care & Feeding Of Marriage."

There is even a "Dr. Laura Action Figure" that her audience can buy that spouts quotes frequently said by Dr. Laura.

In addition, recent radio-info.com posts regarding Dr. Laura in 2006:

that chart says 12-plus. Maybe he's third in 25-54

Then maybe he should quit being so vague by omitting that.

What I'm wondering is how Mancow has 1.5 million listeners. He only has 24 cities. The only big market he's on in is San Francisco. Every other city he airs in is basically a big town.

"Then maybe he should quit being so vague by omitting that."

WHY? Radio and TV are intentionally "so vague" whenever ratings are quoted. Thats show biz!

Yes, he is 3rd among 25-54, and #1 per capita. Look at the others and it's not hard to see why. I hadn't seen the new list until just now, but was caught off guard the other day while trying to get the Salem rep off the phone, and she said Beck was now tied with Gallagher for 6th. I don't think she liked my questioning amazement at how Mike can have so many listeners at 2 in the morning.

Considering that the Arbitrons are only a little bit more accurate than a Ouija board or reading the entrails of a chicken, anyone can pretty much claim anything that they want to claim about the size of their audience and have a reasonable chance of being correct.

Are you telling me that Miami, Cincinnati, Kansas City, and Indianapolis are just "big towns?" These are all Top 30 markets and Miami is huge.

1.5 million does not seem out of the range of possibilities.

WMEN is a "Miami" station in quotes. At least in terms of listeners from a market. WPB is barely a top-50 market. And Indianapolis is hardly a top-30 market... it's actually #40, and has gone up 1 or 2.

Out of curiosity, who of all these folks would be considered the highest rated "liberal" talker? Ed Shultz? Most of the names I'm familiar with are on the very low end. There's a whole debate there about why they're there, that I won't get into.

I'm also surprised that Rush still gets the high ratings he does. I got burned out on most political talk years ago so I kinda lost touch with a lot of these people. I assumed Laura Ingraham would be at the bottom of the ratings, judging by what I've read on here, and that Sean Hannity would be tops, considering how many places I tend to hear his show (# of stations, not necessarily people listening)...

Finally, what on earth are Opie & Anthony and Mancow doing here? Wouldn't they be more hot talk? Or is it just that they are the only hot talkers out there that are big enough to show up in this list? :)

WMEN is moving to Boca Raton and by the looks of the Radio-Locator site, it's a pretty big signal covering Miami during the day with 25kw.

WMEN is already there. It actually moved just south of Bell Glade to the tower site of WFTL. Boca is its city of license.

Why James-Crystal Radio made that move baffles me. I think they just got greedy and didn't think. First off, those patterns are very generous. Keep in mind these are both directional AM stations and their signal is aimed at the Palm Beach County coast. They can be heard in much of Broward County but in Dade forget it. And that's just daytime. Heck, WFTL has more listeners in Palm Beach-Boca than Miami-FTL and they continue to target Miami-FTL. WMEN had a good amount of listeners in West Palm-Boca when it was WJNA, and some in Miami-FTL. Now that they've changed formats and shifted target markets, WMEN has a 0 in both markets.

That's exactly the case. Them and Tom Leykis are the only ones to make a showing. Same goes with sports talk. There's Jim Rome, and then.........?

The noise floor in South Florida is high enough that the R-L patterns are rather generous. And, of course, Boca Raton is in Palm Beach County, which means WMEN is still, officially, a West Palm Beach station, which is market #46.
