TOP TEN AUSTIN ARBITRENDS FALL PHASE 1 PPM

1. KASE
2. KBPA
3. KHFI
4. KLBJ-AM
5. KLBJ-FM
6. KKMJ 6. KPEZ (tie)
8. KLZT
9. KVET-FM
10. KAMX
Looks like that new program management at K-VET-FM is working out well.

The Top 10 radio stations are really looking like their audience is getting really old. Country is still working, and you still have 1 CHR in the list and 1 Spanish language format. But the remaining 7 makes me wonder alot about all the problems that operators need to face.

Younger listeners are more suceptible to Pandora and such. Radio programmers need to take note of the available broadcast radio audience and figure out how to reach it and sell it.

This is a 12+ (or 6+ depending the source) ranking. I can assure you, our audience is not getting 'old'. The average age of a BOB listener is 40, and even with KUT in the mix we are Top 5 18-34 and #1 25-54.

And a small correction in the subject line - this is the October book, not a Fall phase 1 trend. In PPM, books come out every month with an additional Holiday book.

Are there any numbers and/or trends for 18 and under? These are tomorrow's regular listeners.

An average of 40 seems a little old if this business is youth driven. 18-34 and 25-54 are too broad to say an audience is young.

What are the numbers for 12-18?

I believe the advertisers picked 25-54 because that's your peak earning years and consequently your peak spending years.

Fred, I certainly don't disagree with that thought. Just about the future of stations that trend old. KASE was #1 in the market when they dropped Big Band in favor of Country Music way back in the 70's.

Oh, no disagreement with today's numbers. I just keep hearing that radio is losing/has lost the next generation to iPods/streaming media/smoke signals, whatever.

All I know is my daughter never, ever, ever listens to live radio. I drive her car once a month and the radio is set right where I left it. I never saw a radio among the students at her high school. Now, she's at university and I never hear a radio playing in the dorms.

Radio needs a modern day Howard Stern... someone who would command a cult following among young listeners. And we pray that he or she uses her power for good.

Radio needs an owner that understands the importance of a personality like Howard Stern.

That's what it will take for FM audio broadcasting to not be the 21st Century's buggy whip.

Or even better, we need to realize we're in the entertainment business...and the FM frequencies are just one more way to distribute it.
