Top Turkeys of Boston Radio, 2007

Got this idea from an item on Jon Keller's blog. (Last year's turkeys for him included W, Rummy,
Kerry, OJ, Michael Richards, Neil Entwistle, a Kerry Healey ad, etc.)
http://wbztv.com/kellerblog/local_blogentry_317165545.html

So here we go: nominate your 2007 Boston radio turkeys

some of mine:
--gotta say it: Howie Carr for not keeping quiet about the 'TKK offer. Now he's stuck--
admittedly will have a pretty good salary, but he's still on AM (crappy signal after dark
for some) and with the likes of the Felon. No FM Talk for you Howie!

--prog talk radio fans, who have not had a (commercial) station to call their own since 12/22/06.
Perhaps someday Air America will return to Boston...and San Diego...and Akron...and Cincy...
and Austin...and New Haven...and...

--Mike Barnicle, who left the inherited morning slot at WTKK (or did 'TKK decide not to renew
his contract?) I guess he's busy with other things.

--The Zone 1510 and ESPN Boston which haven't taken advantage (signal is a part of the
reason why) of the love of sports in this town, at least not as much as they should be.
But hey, thanks to 1510 we get to hear Brother Stair overnight. Isn't that great!

I would have nominated Glenn Geffner for his over-talking ways as Joe C's sidekick but I'll
cut him some slack; he had some good HR calls and at least he won't be on nearly as often
next year.

--Someone surely will nominate a certain local media blog which made a bunch of incorrect
predictions about talk radio in this town... :) I won't but maybe someone else will.

--Myself, perhaps, for taking part in the above. :)

Lisa Hughes, WBZ-TV:
"So what are you going to be listening to when you drive (your kids) home from school?"
Howie Carr:
"I'm probably gonna listen to Jay Severin...on 96.9 WTKK, Boston's Talk Evolution..."

How about some non-talk radio subjects?

WPLM - their flip to mainstream AC certainly hasn't exactly been all that successful. The rimshot 99.1 going head to head with GM's powerhouse Magic 106.7 and Citadel's market-leading Lite Rock 105 was a bad idea from the start, and the ratings have taken note.

WBOS, anyone? The station manages to blow yet another potential format change (not saying sports was the right way to go, but even so) and despite a very successful Earthfest earlier this year, is still without a PD.

Every FM owner other than Clear Channel - are you just going to sit around while WJMN takes over? PPM hasn't been the kindest so far to urban-based formats, but other than WJMN and, to some extent WXKS, there's not a single other station playing rhythmic music.

Just my two cents...

X First on the list is Keller himself. When he comes on I tune out.

* Maloney -does this guy ever get anything right?

* The Sport Huddle- I listened briefly the other night. Andelman has turned into the aging Borst belt "comic" has been, who doesn't understand he isn't funny. You could tell the others in the studio felt his garbage was painfully sexist. His Hillary P'ing jokes and statement that Serverino's body fluid is the desire of all women, was gross.

* There is an obvious candidate at WBZ. He owes someone an apology. I bet he didn't though.

* Severino didn't get invited (to WGBH), and Em gets 86'd. Jaybird did what comes naturally. Rooney never should have signed on and got what she deserved.
