Torg Suspended

Wonder if they will look for a new partner for him or if they will slide him out as well. They always claimed on air their bosses didn't care for them but they drew listeners.

Hope they do not juggle things to where they bring on another ESPN network show to (not) listen to.

After a 10 day suspension, 97.1 today announced that Scott Torgerson was let go. This story has gotten HUGE hype in the Facebook world, as 'The Common Man and The Torg' was a very popular show on 97.1. Currently, the 'Save The Torg' Facebook page has more 'likes' than the 97.1 page itself. It has even gotten national attention, via a brief article on MSN's homepage.

There is no denying what he did was stupid, but it deserve being fired over, especially given the apology to Desmond Howard's family that was accepted?

Personally, this is a huge disappointment as I would look forward to everyday getting in my car and getting to hear these two banter back and forth. Anyone else going to miss the Torg; or did anyone think he was too big of a dope (which he was; which is why the show was great)? If anyone else agrees with me and wants Torg back, like the Facebook page Save "The Torg"
here: https://www.facebook.com/SaveTheTorg

Last, check out Scott's own page briefly discussing the issue: http://www.thetorgshow.com

Starting at midnight tonight, we will be officially boycotting 97.1 The Fan and 1460AM. We hope you will too.

I, too, for the most part, enjoyed Torg. That said...there are so many talented and hard-working radio people in Columbus (well, all across the COUNTRY, but for here, we're talking about Columbus) who lost their jobs and, of course, their health insurance not because of saying or tweeting anything foolish, but simply for the sake of cutting costs. Many of these folks had, or have, families, too. How on EARTH Torg could have possibly not seen what has occurred in his own industry boggles the mind. Any radio talent who doesn't have their head in the clouds should have known before a single utterance, or TWEET, that anything with wishing someone's death- even in a joke!- was a foolish place to have gone. He could have tweeted nearly anything else that would have been hilarious- maybe wishing that Desmond Howard would discover a talent for Vegas showgirl gig, becoming the new face of Mary Kay Cosmetics...ANYTHING besides what he said. And it would have been funny. And Torg would have nailed his point about really not liking Howard as a commentator. And Herbie wouldn't have gotten so bent out of shape. And Torg's family would still have health insurance. I guess, all in all, I don't have a great deal of sympathy. Find a different job, Torg, if you want to remain in Columbus. You certainly won't be the first.

The Torg just posted this update. He doesn't want his fan to boycott WBNS-AM-FM and/or the
clients of the radio station.

Thursday:

It's the day after peeps and like the last 11 days I have not slept very much. I love the support but I want to be honest and say a few things. I read posts on Save The Torg Facebook on calling 97.1 clients. I will say this. A lot of their clients are my friends as well. They have reached out to me and wished me well. They believed in me and the show. I love them for it. When we first started we did a different type of show. These companies took a chance on us because they believed in us. I believed in them. It also effects the account executives at The Fan. They are good people. They work hard. They had no say in this and I don't want them to suffer. They are good people with families. To those clients reading this. Thank You. I hope I helped you make a profit. I am sorry if you are taking heat. Many of you know me and know I don't want your business to do poorly. Small business makes America. So in closing I will say this. Keep on supporting me. Without you I would be in bed with a bottle of Yukon Jack crying but lets please lay off the sponsors. Also I wish no ill will to station management. String Bean didn't want this. Dave Van Stone didn't want this. I honestly don't know whos decision it was. Remember I sent the tweet and take full responsibility I just don't think I deserved to get fired. I feel the love and promise I will respond to every email. Just give me a few days.

Man I love you guys and I still love the station. Please support Mike as well. Let Him Live!

Interesting that Torg's attorney mentioned his ratings. WBNS-FM is not an Arbitron subscriber and is not supposed to have access to the ratings or use them to sell. Hmmm....

Which makes it very interesting how Torg referred to his old show as "the second most popular sports radio show in the country" (!) in the very first blog on his website...

Corby mentioned after he interviewed the Torg, that WBNS-FM may have been concerned about losing the ESPN
network. If they lost it, they would have had to go with all local sports on WBNS-FM as 1230 has the Fox Sports network.

They could've gone with NBC Sports Network evenings and overnights, seeing as that's all of NBC Sports Radio's programming right now.

They have posted a job on oab.com

I think that is some wishful thinking...no way ESPN is going to exit a station which has the real draw in this community for anyone listening to Sports Talk...no WAY at all especially with two new network competitors launching in January.

Why was WBNS-FM in danger of losing the ESPN affiliation? ???
