Tornado alerts on EAS

Our area got hit with at least one tornado.

It was great to see EAS systems working as designed. I saw alerts come through from KSTO/NWS, and from KFBKAMFM.

One of our staff just got home when a tornado hit his home. He was listening to the radio, so he had at least a little time to brace for it.

Radio STILL provides warning many would not have received otherwize.

I received an EAS alert on my smartphone, tone and all. I heard the attention signal and was shocked.

I, too, was pleased with much of the EAS Warnings System during the tornado threat. Having heard the National Weather Service audio on Comcast Cable, I still wish they could improve the audio quality on the warnings, since they do contain valuable info. My wife heard them and said she had trouble hearing the words clearly.

When I previously posted memories of past EAS screw-ups during my days as a board op, those were predominantly CHP-issued Amber Alerts with unintelligible or totally missing audio.

With the speed of The Internet and its capability to send crystal-clear mp3 audio, there must be software that could play it when the EAS system is triggered....at least I would hope so.

If cable companies are all digital, they must have a digital capable endec. I'm fairly sure Comcast is all digital, since they are in my area. There may be a break in the chain from where the audio is encoded before going out to all digital devices. They must provide video and audio for all set top boxes, digital adapters, and cable-ready (QAM tuner) TV's. Unfortunately, the only way to test it is to trigger an event.

I'm no EAS expert. I know a bit about it since working in the cable industry for over 20 years.

Not 5 minutes like Larry the Cable Guy. ;)

Like Stewie stated with his smart phone, while up in Central Washington state at a business conference in a remote area at a resort my smart phone tripped off an alert in full silent mode of a tornado alert for the area back here loud and clear. Guess someone is doing something right! In my case, kudos to Accuweather's phone app for stepping up when pressed into service!
