Tornados in Alabama

Just returned from a 3 day trip to Tuscaloosa to help out the CC stns there......one thing came to mind while I was there as the LOCAL CC stations were pumping out news and info for the LOCAL population.....you we keep hearing about the demise of "over the air broadcasting".....

HOW'S THAT STORM COVERAGE ON PANDORA WORKING OUT FOR YOU?

OR

HOW'S THAT SMARTPHONE WORKING WITH THE CELL NETWORKS DOWN OR BUSIED OUT?

OR

HOW'S THAT STREAMING OF A MILLION RADIO STATIONS WORKING OUT FOR YOU WITH NO POWER OR INTERNET?

Dont get me wrong..... all of the new technology is important but it will NEVER replace what radio is doing in Alabama right now.

I have been dealing with a family illness for the last couple of weeks so I wan't paying attention to the little details of which communities are affected and how. Tonight my brother-in-law called from Huntsville, AL.

Here is a city of 350,000 people that has had NO POWER since Wednesday. Have minimum damage in the county. The problem is SIX of those big cross-country transmission lines were destroyed. You can buy gasoline. Almost all retailers are closed. There are no traffic signals. Local land-line phone service died after a few hours. (No generators to back stop of big batteries?)

Cell service has now returned which is how he called me. I guess their T-1s and microwave interconnects went down temporarily but have now returned to service.

He said he has been listening (battery radio, car radio?) to one radio station which has harnessed itself up with a local TV station and they are doing wall to wall local information. Where can you get certain items. What store is getting a shipment and will have 40 emergency generators to sell first thing in the morning.

I'll bet there are some individual station managers and owners this week that are kicking themselves for not having invested in stand-by power, and in some cases, not investing in maintenance of the unit they have... but isn't working. They could have really put a "Hero Shine" on their halo that would have been very memorable in their community over the next ten years at least.
