Torrid vs PVC coil

Has anyone besides Keith Hamilton used a torrid coil to feed a 3 meter antenna?
I'm just wondering why the PVC coil is so popular when a torid coil could be easily hidden inside of a weather proof housing along with a variable capacitor to tune the antenna.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by am1670acr on 02/14/06 11:58 PM.</FONT></P>
