TOS's reception elsewhere

I noticed you guys are having problems getting tos in southern maine mainly because of that station in portland.
I am having trouble getting tos up in northern VT now. Instead of Getting WTos 105.1, i seem I an now getting cool 105 WKOL more on the 1-91 corridor than I used too.
I am noticing the same thing at Jay Peak resort where I could always get WTOS fine now it seem to be WKOL 105.1 most of the time.

Has Tos been asking to drop their reception a bit?
 
Before WJZP came on last year I was able to grab TOS as far south as the Kennebunk exit on I-95 before it was all splatter from WSHK in Kittery. Over the years though during tropo season I have been able to grab them in the Dunkin Donuts parking lot in Chelmsford, Mass. I have also noticed its been weaker in Lisbon Falls cause last trip I was up there it would get beat on in spots by WJZP as well.

WTOS used to blast into Northern VT, prior to WKOL coming on the air. From my travels around the "Kingdom", you can find pockets of good reception for WTOS. WKOL at 25kw seems to throw a pretty good signal around Northern VT, with the antenna being around Plattsburgh.

Used to be a huge WTOS fam in the "Rock of Maine" days, many moons ago. Other goodies from Maine that can be heard in the "Kingdom" include.. 107.5, "Frank FM", 96.3 WLOB-FM (Once Top 40, "96 WMR"), WMGX 93.1, BLM @ 102.9, and the "Holy Roller" at 105.9 that was once "WIGY".

I hope I havn't dated myself to badly.
 
If it wasn't for WKol Wtos would come in clear in lyndonville vt and at jay...
When did WKOL sign on?
Did they get a CP for higher power or move their tower recently?

I bet you guys that if it wan't for WKOL there would be a few less people who would have satellite. the biggest complaint I get get talking to townspeople is that there is no rock to listen to anymore so they buy satellite

They come in quite well from Bangor on down east here to Mount Desert Island. Actually from higher locations on Mount Desert Island you can actually SEE Sugarloaf, so their line-of-sight reception alone is excellent. With a good antenna they even come in well here along the shoreline and in the nooks and crannies. Have heard them on car-radio as far east as Jonesport and Machias.
Nothing blocking them on 105.1 or adjacent frequncioes in this area..yet!
 
Hell my senior year of high school 2 years back when we did our senior trip to oreleand ME and one day at bar harbor I could sleep listening to TOS on my portable walkman I thought that was cool. one of these days I gotta ski at either sunday river (where tos comes in clearly)(also our college station from VT come in coincidentally on top of OZ hill at sunday river lol) or sugarloaf. the conditions were bad this year though so I never got a chance to get to maine.

I thought with a higher tower on Sugarloaf and 7000 more watts, the signal would at least not loose ground, maybe the 105.1 in New York State has done something with their signal.

One question to TOS fans however, does anyone miss the major kick A$$ station that "105TOS" used to be back when those awesome, amazing Chris Corley sweepers screamed off the Sugarloaf summit? Back when it got a little later in the day, they would happily bring out all the "F" songs!!!! I used to listen while back roading up in Northern NH and in Maine, and we would fall over laughing at what a great rock station attitude they had back then. I have never heard since, such great sweepers like Chris Corley saying: "The station that's better then sex!.....ah.. in prison! The Mountain of Pure Rock, 105TOS!!" Then they would go into a classic like F***ing Hostile by Pantera, unabridged!! Or "Touch that tuner, and the puppy gets it!!" or the famous, "We rock, theyyyy suck! The Mountain of Pure Rock 105TOS"!!
Does anyone out there have any tapes of those hilarious liners from back then?

Anyone remember hearing "Ode To My Car" by Adam Sandler at 6pm at night un edited? No editing what so ever. Now we have the post Janet Malfunction gate times and Clear Channel's no tolerance policy. No more unpredictability it seems.
Also, it seems that the current day TOS with the monster truck guy voice has dumped their formatic way of music presentation. Back in the later 90's, this is how WTOS sounded:

A. Announcer goes into a song.
B. First song fades out and an actual SEGUE occurs where another song fades in, with no station id or talk at all. (How novel!)
C. Intense, masterfully edited, cleverly written, short and biting 105TOS sweeper lasting 10 or 15 seconds would play. Ha! Fun.
D. A third hard rocking tune plays out, long version if applicable, and no edting.
E. A second SEGUE where the third song fades into the forth song.
F. The forth song plays out
G. The live DJ comes on and goes into what was heard, or some other psychological slightly tweaked comments to affect the probably altered listener driving the twice as large logging truck in the Allagash Wilderness, or the motorheads in Colebrook. Saying things only they would understand.

I miss that nice format. Once the music started, you know what was in store. Now adays, it seems more random, a commercial can come on at anytime. It does not have as much of a live feel anymore IMO.

I want to say though recently I took a drive up to Clinton Maine to visit a friend and heard Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness" uncut at 5:30ish and sad this is it was "Rushhour" and Chris Rush was on vaca and the PD Revernend was filling in. I have never heard that DJ play that song uncut on his show 7-midnight before so thought as the song came on this is gonna be so chopped up. The rest of the hour was just sick to as far as playlist w/ Pantera, Fear Factory, old Metallica and Type-O Negative. I miss the old TOS as well Dr.

The old TOS was one of the reasons I got into radio. Too bad the big boys are uncomfortable with anything that isn't cookie cutter. The good news is that at least TOS still mostly rocks, but I agree good Doctor, the old days were the good ones. Have faith though, I think you'll see the big boys becoming more attached to local chatter/imaging/relations as the big satellite boys cut into their bottom line. Just give it um, 10 years or so.

The WTOS that I remember called itself "The Rock of Maine". (I still have a couple of their old T-shirts) At the time, they were doing an alternative rock format, specifically, it seemed, as an alternative to WBLM, the only other Rock station in Maine, much of the time, in those years, after the demise of WYNZ-FM,
as a Rock station. The DJs at the time included Kent Thurston, Annie Airheart,
JC, and a couple of partimers. It was a pretty cool little station, with a BIG signal...

I remember first hearing WTOS as the "Rock'n'Roll Mountain" playing AOR. Must've been very early 80's, or were they on in the late 70's?

My mom used to rent a summer cottage on Cranberry Island, off the coast from Southwest Harbor. WTOS came in fairly well out there, quite a distance from Sugarloaf.

I recall driving south in that era I could hear WTOS past Portland almost to the New Hampshire border before 105.1 in Providence overcame it, after miles of battle.

I believe it was during the mid 80's or so, we used to regularly listen to WTOS just north of Littleton, NH, and it was known at that time as "Sugarloaf 105." Can also recall the stations fixation with Frank Zappa was strong and committed even back then. I really love this station. Most of their "City Grade" signal is in the most rural areas of Maine, the Alligash, Coos County NH, and of course rural Quebec. They must really come in well at "Lac Megantic." I can only imagine how the rural Quebec teenagers must think of America's Mountain of Pure Rock unedited! What a great high altitude stick also!

I have had fun trying to get TOS on I93 and I 91 in st jay to as far as the Franconia notch at Cannnan. its an exact 50/50 battle in lynodnville vt against kool 105 dependent on the terrain. Its really weired your'll be cranking out to Tos with panterea than all of a sudden go ove a small hill and your listening to elvis presley.

I can still clock tos in NH on I-95. you just have to get away from that stupid LP on 105.1 in portland ME and tos comes back in.

I've been "clocked" on I-95 myself, by the State Police.
