Toucher and Rich the end ?

PS An item I overlooked in the previous post re: replacement(s) - from the InsideRadio.com article:

"WBZ-TV Boston reported that its morning sports anchor Dan Roche will be part of the new morning team."

Except that WBZ-TV NEVER made such a report...

Their report simply stated, "WBZ-TV's Dan Roche, who fills in on the show, said Rich and Fred's chemistry set them apart from the rest."

I also doubt Dan taking over as co-host. My bet is on Hardy, personally. I think that the replacement will be chosen in-house.

Gonna miss Rich, and honestly the dynamic that they had (especially in the WBCN days) can't be recreated. But, I'm excited for what's to come.

Anyone who's ever listened to Jim whine on the radio (something he does often) would know there's no way he's the type to accept a job that required a 4am alarm time.

I think they go with Hardy. Keep it in house.

Back to the Rich S. —the thing about non competes MA law restricts them more than most states. I think as long as he served through his previous contract he’s pretty CLOSE to a UFA in MA. The onus on 98.5 would be prove he’s taking trade secrets or something proprietary with him. A real stretch imo.

What IS possible: his former employer could possibly get a restraining order til a court date to prove “damages” but that seems so highly unlikely. More likely just “threaten” such. Because 98.5 knows it would lose & really: what’s accomplished by keeping him off the air for a few weeks at a very high litigation expense. In todays radio business environment??

Reading between the lines it sounds like Rich has something lined up. The longer we don’t hear WHERE the more likely it is in-market radio…for a lot of the issues raised here.

Yet makes no money....and hasn't for years.

He's also had a lucrative year....probably his most lucrative year ever.
An increase in 1 year pay , say $50k + pretax doesn’t come anywhere NEAR a 50% divorce divide in net worth.

Very ballpark, but Toucher might be net worth $5 million or so..maybe more? Even if it’s half that— the point is similar…

Divide that number in 2. A $50k or whatever salary bump is nothing versus a $2.5 to $3 mil immediate Divorce hair cut. Not even counting child support, etc.

THE most important career advice you’ll ever get: marry well—or don’t. Everything else is managable. Divorce, especially later in career can be economically fatal.

I was listening to the show (guess it was maybe two years ago) where Fred showed up sounding drunk and they sent him home. This was his first absence to get help with alcohol addiction. But before they sent him home he said multiple times that he had 2 million and it would mostly be gone with the divorce. That number struct me as low and maybe he was just basing it off something like a 401k as they had a nice home in Wellesley or Newton (forget which) so his total assets must've been considerably higher.

I think you’re spot on. Net worth includes everything including home equity value. So —ballpark— that probably gets you in the $5 mil neighborhood plus/minus $1 million.
Of course ALL of that is usually divisible by 2 in divorce settlements….it’s big money loss no matter how u slice. What he possibly meant in that ”compromised” state was —he was going to lose $2 million, yes, but not that thats everything.

Fred Toucher addresses the process of the station interviewing and picking candidates to be his future partner along with the financial issues facing Beasley and the radio business in general (mostly regarding the ability to monetize digital).

Fred claims that The Sports Hub generates 18% of Beasley's annual revenue.

Interesting stuff here:

"he is not involved in reviewing résumés and conveyed that there is nothing he can do about it"

I never assumed Fred did. But he has to get along with the person hired in place of Rich. And there are a few supposed candidates which would be neg. impact guys for me. I wouldn't listen to the show.

As long as Fred can maintain his health he can work with almost anybody who doesn't suck or think he is the new star of the show. I don't see any other station becoming a threat for #1. As of yet anyway.

I heard some of the tryout group and if Mgt want a vet' broadcaster Hardy (homecourt advantage) and Johnston would seem to have the best shot. More of of foil for Fred to rant with, it would prob' be Kendra and Large Joe Murray.

If Mgt confident Fred is 'ok' and can be solid enough to handle the tough grind then they might not feel they need a backup #1 morning man and they could go younger. Middleton could be fun and seems ok with the offensive humor that could be aimed at her, if she gets the job.

If Hardy really wants the job I think he gets it. Especially if Fred's ego is ok with it. Toucher ended the show with a remark that 'he wasn't apologizing for anything he wrote' which I took to mean about his relationship with Rich. Not the other stuff when he was 'ill'.
