Toucher and Rich "Worst Sportscaster"

Is anyone else enjoying the T/R Worst Sportscaster bracket? I like that they have the regular national tools like Joe Morgan, but it's good to see them picking on WEEI. For every great sports broacaster, there are 100 that have no right being on the air. I think It will come down to D/C VS Steven A. Smith, with D/C taking it all.

I have a feeling the big show might take it...although joe morgan might because that guy is intolerable.

Like most of the market, I haven't heard this. (I was probably listening to The Big Show at the time.)

That said, this is a smart move. Sometimes poking the bear is a good idea if the bear has a bigger audience base. I don't think EEI would be stupid enough to respond, but either way, T & R have nothing to lose. Good for them.

Like most of the market

See, I strongly disagree with that statement. Granted they are not doing so well in the Arbitron Ratings but everyone I know in my age bracket 25+ listens to them, and can quote the show by heart. I don't understand how a show that everyone seems to like, and everyone can quote by heart is really not doing better. Besided the antiquated and flawed method currently in use by Arbitron it also amazes me the huge bias the Boston Herald's "Inside Track" has against them. It is clear that they are very much in bed with Greg Hill (they appear on his show every week) and that they let that affect thier reporting. T and R made national news with thier "worst comedian" competition yet they didnt make the Herald's "inside track" Newspapers in New York and across the country picked up on this but not the major paper in thier own market? If you really think most of the market doesnt listen I would start asking around I bet you would be suprised how many people 20-40 years old not only listen to the show but are huge fans. I think this show serves as a prime example of the problems with the current Arbitron system.

I vote for D + C all the way!

I'm a big fan of t & r...but your posts annoy the crap out of me

I thought 99.9 % of guys who are 25 years old listen to 94.5. What are you doing listening to BCN, thats for old folks. :)

My two cents worth:

Local:
#1 Gerry Callahan
#2 Larry Johnson
#3 John Meterparel

National:
#1 Bryant Gumble
#2 Joe Morgan
#3 Tim McCarver

Gotta love it. The counter-argument to "the antiquated and flawed method currently in use by Arbitron" is "everyone I know in my age bracket 25+." Yeah, that sure is a better method of measuring the radio audience.

Since you're such an expert on Arbitron's flaws, come up with a better system. We're waiting on the edge of our seats.

I don't think anyone said they were an expert on Arbitrons rating system...he just said something that I've noticed also. There is a buzz around for Toucher and Rich. WBCN needs to let them go all talk and stop playing the same 10 songs every week. However this thread is about the worst sportscasters...and this is not a popular belief around here but I'm starting to think Jerry Remy is getting old. I think most of his color on NESN is great, but he seems to be getting a big head, and thinks he's the star and not the game...just something I've noticed more and more the last few years.

1) Most of the people in the market don't listen to anything. No daypart has more than 50% of the audience.

2) I'd say the major paper in Boston is the Globe, not the Herald.

Will, I think you mean that no program has 50% of the audience, but either way, I was being deliberately glib. Regarding ratings technology, perhaps the introduction of PPMs (currently scheduled for early 09) will shift the balance of power a bit. I believe that the rock stations may be faring better in the markets that have already converted.

I do think that T & R may be getting some traction. Also, I would not be surprised to see The Big Show lose some audience as metered technology tends to diminish the #1 stations' margins (no more drawing an arrow down the page of the diary, multiple program credit within the quarter hour, etc.). Even so, The Big Show is the "Oprah" of radio. I suspect it will remain a monster regardless of methodology.

Sorry if I annoy you WLYNGM but I only speak my mind, you have no obligation to read what I write. The only reason I mentioned anything about ratings is because of Dark Night's comment "Like most of the market". I am sorry but it irritates me that the only show around that in my opinion is trying to do something different is treated with a bias by the local media, and others. It's fine if you don't like the show but when a local show makes national news papers but not the local news paper who happens to be a weekly contributor to thier competition I see that as a bias, and unfair reporting.

Dumber than a box of hair, I already did. I said in my post that I think they should use adresses and mail instead of home phone's because everyone (unless your homeless) has an address where as not everyone has a home phone, there bye making the system more fair in my opinion. You can come off the edge of your seat now.

I know that by defending the alt./Rock format, and Toucher and Rich that I am going to be attacked on here but I cannot fathom how these stations in general, and T & R seem to be doing so poorly. It doesnt make sense with what I see, and hear. Dumber, Arbitron takes a large sample of people in certain age brackets and polls them as to what staions they listen to at what times. Admittedly, I have polled a much, much, much, much, much smaller portion of the population in my age bracket (im 25 btw to answer the question) and almost everyone I have asked listen to T and R. I admit it is most likely an annomolly, and I am sure that my friends are mostly like minded so it is not really a diverse sampling. I never claimed it to be a scientific study just a casual poll.

The beauty of this country is that I have a right to my opinions, and to voice my mind. Everyone else has the same right and they also have the choice to ignore what I say or to question it, or comment on it. When I something that I feel is unfair or biased I am going to challenge it, the same way I would expect someone to call me out or challenge me. It's no secret that I think the current Arbitron system is unfair. Not only the home phone thing but the fact that people can just outright lie! Why would they, I have no idea. Television has a system that directly records what channel the TV is tuned too, and which person in the household is watching it. (I had the opportunity to be a neilson family in the past.) I think PPM is going to be a huge step in the right direction, and I think it is going to suprise a lot of people. If I end up being wrong I will be the first one to admit it, an example though is Opie and Anthony in New York they fared much better with the unofficial PPM trial numbers than they did with the official old method ratings.

Freddy was the man...over the last couple of years he has been over exposed. He does have some good insite on the game of football that writers will never have, but to often he plays the big dumb jock act on the show. Not knowing the guy I dont know if it is an act or if he is like that.

As for the Big Show being the Oprah of the Boston Radio market... that is more than fair, but I dont think it's popular because of the hosts. WEEI is so popular because of how much the sports fans in Boston care about their teams, well at least the Sox and Pats. What would happen with WEEI if a station with a signal as good or better than WEEI went all Sports Talk in Boston?

I could go the rest of my life without hearing John Dennis go "yeah yeah yeah" while Gerry is making a point... they flat out suck, and I hate my boss for making me listen to it in the morning.

Why would you be attacked? I don't think anyone on here has pooped on their show...if anything, they receive a lot of well earned appraise....I think the show kicks ass

and by golly darnit that's the American way.

anyways, maybe it's just me but i could click onto any post in the past 2 months and see the following

"WBCN is amazing" "Hillman/Carrie/anything WAAF sucks" "Everyone single one of my friends/people I know believe xyz...".

I guess I was just thinking out loud (er...writing out loud) when I posted about your posts annoying me. Either way, I don't want this to jump into flame war territory and have the entire thread be moved...topic at hand...My vote is for Joe Morgan.

First of all, so I dont get accused of using this thread wrongly, My vote is for Susan Waldman from the Yes network, or Tim mcarver. Ok now that I got that out of the way...

BCN is amazing these days. well T and R and Hardy are good. BUt AAF is still pretty cool in my book. Mike Hsu taught me mostly everything I know about radio and hes overall one of the most standup guys in the buisness. I do think they dropped the ball when they got rid of Neanderpaul Marshall.

yea im still working out the kinks on how to use the board haha the last paragraph (starting with BCN) is what i wrote
