TOUGH TIMES AT ENTERCOM

Tom Taylor reported today that ETM's eliminating 401k matching and there *may* be a 2009 wage freeze. Other boards on R-I report there's been layoffs at Entercom clusters in other markets. Let's hope for the best for those here in Seattle.

With 438M in earnings the company is in the red for more than 8M. YIKES!

If the ax falls, it should be those at the top that get it. Not the airstaff/sales and other poor drones below.....

:-\ The ax already fell. Seven gone from Entercom Radio Seattle today. (early reports are . . . KMTT and KKWF Promo Directors, Receptionist, Executive Assistant, Natl. Sales Coordinator, graphic designer and one other). Bummer.

Sad day :-\ There was to be an announcement and many hoped it would be announcing a new PD and a major staff addition. By mid-week this cowboy and others knew that was not to be the case. :-[ Sad state of radio right now with THE WOLF about to have its best book in two years and tomorrow should beat KMPS in every demo. Makes you mad to see the state of radio in Seattle and you wonder who is next  7-10 people gone full and part time.

Everyone's next. Potentially. Nobody is immune. Not just at Entercom, but everywhere.

Not to be facetous, but looking at the way things are these days, you'd be all the wiser to get your Plan Bs in order, brush up on connections and get fresh airchecks and resumes ready. Because this ain't over yet.....

Hey, bongwater ... hand me that bong!!

Entercom's actions today even beat the recent wave at CBS and previous moves inside Clear Channel's employment rosters.

Surprised? Not quite. This poster is in the middle of the financial storm and I will tell you that we're are knee deep in a very, very serious recession. All these radio folk and even Boeing sheetmetal workers worried about co-pays will be digging ditches pretty soon. A little off topic but true.

I can't believe no one has said anything about BJ yet. This is a contract year for the show.

They had an incident at 8:30am on Wednesday. The Reverend En Fuego and BJ got into an argument where En Fugeo ended up "giving his two week notice" then walked off the show. Afterward, they cut to "Best-Of" broadcasts and haven't returned LIVE.

"Recession"....funny word. Is it just me or is that other word (the one that rhymes with recession and starts with a "D") even more abhorrent to say in context to the economy than the f-bomb in broadcast media these days? Everyone seems to avoid it....

Like I said, this aint over yet and more than likely, just the beginning.....

All of the Entercom Seattle managers are running out of people to manage....

Even with Entercom laying off people, they would be idiots not to renew BJ's show. Whether it's your cup of tea or not, there is no denying the impact his show has had on KISW since it launched. I just hope Entercom doesn't get feeling the show could survive even if a show member was cut. I have always believed that each character is important in their own way to the success of a show and losing a cast member really changes the dynamic of the show. Unfortunately management doesn't think the same way like in the case of Stephen Kilbreath getting the boot off of T-Man's show.

It was eight years ago when Entercom tried the same thing by offering Bob Rivers a new contract, but only Bob - not Spike and Joe. And we all know how that turned out.

Hopefully it was a lesson well learned.

many contracts up. BJ and Monti were number one and two in the last couple of trends 25-54 and deserve props and to stay. Many like myself are doing odd jobs to make things meat. now that movin has won mamma believes it is time to a realality check so here you go:

Number 1: Bad jocks can hurt a station but lack of management support can kill it.

Number B: Why do stations cut marketing and wonder why they got no ya ya numbers. you can have the greatest show in the world but ya got to tell people about it. You can adapt your station but you must tell people or you are screaming in the wind.

Number C: 20 commericials an hour will decrease your audience. Ask anyone at KOMPASS or KISS or STAR or KZOK I have no time for their talent but less for the mindnuming commercial sets.

Finally when things are down it is the time to invest in your on-air product not cut it. MOVIN launched when 92.5 was at a low point and it was a risk that paid off.

THE FOUR POINT PHILOSOPHY OF MAMMA

I tried to get them to hire me.... look what happened! ;)
