tower locations

Not that I know of

You should check out www.radio-locator.com

You can check out the power and height of the tower. You can also click on the coordinated and it will redirect you to a google map showing you were exactly the tower is located.

Now a map compiled with the location of each tower in Houston I haven't even seen.

FM would be easy...Most FMs are in Mo City on the 2000ft sticks (but not all)....The AMs though are all scattered around town and all run different power levels (some different day and night) and the directional antennas come into play.

You can look at the FCC website's database and see where most of the FMs are by searching their callsigns, etc....MOST will be on Sr Road or one of the other Missouri City sticks...the rest are scattered around because of spacing, etc requirements.

So why are most of them in Mo City?

juan - thanks for the site.

I was just kinda interested in where all the locations were. Always kinda wondered that.

Because thats the place the FAA let them build their tall towers (starting with the old DeWalt stick in the 60s)...
You just dont plop 1000-2000ft of steel in the air without paperwork and the government's blessing.....
In fact, when the original 2000ft Sr Road was proposed, the FAA thought pilots would come down hard against it...actually some of them said they were in favor of it because they could use the tower strobes for markers to Sugarland and Hobby airports ;)
Also freq vs disatnce spacing places the major 100KW FMs at Mo City...just like the major ones in DFW are on Cedar Hill..but there are exceptions (and the rim shots)

if you want to see something near downtown, then you can easily go to KLTN 1029fm 1000 ft near navigation and jensen. Its also 1230am tower, you will see a detuning skirt at the bottom and then another skirt above that one which is the energized. its isolated from the 1000 ft tower so you can grab on the tower without shocking or killing your self but you definately dont want to touch those skirts.

the best viewing is at the ennis st entrance, but please dont try to get past the gate, thats trespassing.

Actually, the bottom skirt is the AM antenna...it is fed as a folded grounded monopole (if you look, you will see the matching coupler output feeding the ring at the bottom skirt).....the upper skirt is supposed to decouple the rest of the tower and wiring from the AM.....but its radiation sucks; of course with all the connections in it and none are bonded from what I remember, most are probably high resistance now).......They were supposed to redo the upper skirt when the tower was raised from 600 to 1000ft..but it never was....Liberman would do better with a real 1/4wave series fed or even a 5/8wave somewhere else (if they can find the land for the ground system)

i heard but really dont know if lieberman is going to move away from this site. mike been working too hard the past few years and building another site would probably drive him nuts. i had the pleasure working and learning from him for a few years at HBC.

Working for LBI is going nuts enough ;)= poor pay and poor benefits...and having to put up with Chris Buchanan
(along with Winter Horton, what an ego!!)....I really feel for Mike (I need to call him anyway and buy the beers in Dayton next time)
