Tower on Chambers Rd

I was driving on Kenny Rd today and saw a tower that was off Chambers Rd. It was about 100 ft. high with 2 FM bays on it? Who's it is or is it a pirate?

2 bays on a 100' tower might mean that it's a new LPFM station. There should be some information at the tower site.

Translator W252AY 98.3 which airs WCRS-LP 102.1 is located on a short tower on Chambers Rd.

This is also the proposed tower site for two of the LPFM's pending FCC Approval (one at 91.9 FM and one at 92.9 FM if the FCC ever approves them). The one at 92.9 is a singleton app at least (though it has ties to the folks who own the translator at 98.3 based on mailing address) and also ties to 102.1 WCRS-LP who has studios at the same address as the license of the pending 92.9 FM application and of the 98.3 translator.

LPFM in Columbus could end up being as big of monopoly as folks claim Clear Channel is. [And that's no secret.. the mailing addresses for each app can be found on the public accessible FCC apps].

You are right on the tower stuff, I think you are wrong on the other, it is true a some folks got greedy, and did apply for everything, and at the same time, thought it would be cute to attempt to hide it. There are just too many people who know about it, for example, check out the FCC website, on the film council application. My suspicions is this is the first of many, and at the same time, I think they could easily stand to lose the facilities they already have.

It's not a good thing to be caught lying to the FCC, I think that is where it will end up, and the more they insist on prolonging the inevitable, the more they are likely to have other folks included in the dispute, thus bringing forth new information.

Sometimes it's best to quit while you are ahead, but that is not the attitudes these guys have shown before. It's hasn't sunk in that the adversary is different this time.

I believe there should be community radio.. However having one party or group of people with their hands in multiple stations don't seem right.. Of course the FCC sees that stuff and it will be interesting to see how things turn out.. Apparently from reading a recent Tom Taylor newsletter the whole MX situation in Columbus will be fun to sort out with the parties involved and my understanding the various objections filed by each other.

I missed the Tom Taylor stuff, can you give me info on how to find it, thanks.

Yes, so far a mess. I wonder if the fight will continue to go on, and how one of the current owners of the community radio stations might fare, if their relationship with the "channel grabbers" becomes known...

It was just a brief mention -- but I am guessing there is some fussin' going on between some of the parties.

Tower on Chambers

The tower on Chambers is mine. It hosts the 252ay translator which translates WCRS, whose studio is located in the carriage house of the Free Press compound where it is a paying tenant. There is no overlap between the boards of CICJ and WCRS, nor does CICJ have any editorial control over WCRS. The Green Education Fund, which was recently GRANTED also uses the same address to receive mail, but has no relationship with WCRS. It is establishing a standing committee of volunteers to run the new station in accordance with the Green Education Fund's mission statement, and will have no relationship with CICJ, other than being an on-paper-only tenant at the carriage house. CICJ's own application was voluntarily dismissed in order to free- up the MX'ed competitor to have their own full-time station, because CICJ recognized that the Columbus listeners would be better served by a single full-time radio station, than by two 12-hour time-shared stations. The Columbus Film Council is another, actual physical tenant at the carriage house, but has no relationship with either CICJ, WCRS, or the Green Education Fund. Its application was dismissed. A radio producer who specializes in "smooth jazz" has been occupying the airwaves of WCRX, the Bexley station time-shared at 102.1 with WCRS, and filed complaints with the FCC (motios to deny) against all of the above applications, since one of them was in competition with his own, but those motions to deny were dismissed. Some or all of the resulting stations that are now CP'ed, or fully licensed and operating may form an informal local affiliate network for the purpose of program and resource sharing, but it is important to note that, even if a handful of local or syndicated programs are offered on more than one of these stations, the management and administration of each will be conducted by different groups of volunteers in each case, and the themes of each of the stations will be different. When we started WCRS, our goal was to bring community radio to Columbus. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which has been WCRS's being limited to 12 hours/day that goal has been only partially met. Yet WCRS turns away program proposals regularly and we haven't the capacity to accommodate all of the volunteers who have expressed interest in working with us. There is clearly enough talent, inspiration, and personnel to populate multiple LPFM's in the Central Ohio area but the success of each of these stations will be enhanced if we cooperate rather than compete. So; no one involved with WCRS, Green Education, Harambee, CICJ, the Ohio Hispanic Coalition, or the Film Council "lied" to the FCC or to anyone, and the FCC has ruled, resulting in several new construction permits. The challenge now is to build those new stations and to overhaul WCRS to make each a unique, self-sustaining and meritorious community radio station. By the way; I could really use some help clearing bush at the Chambers Rd. tower site, if anyone wants to assist. I'm trying to get rid of the invasive Japanese Honeysuckles there in order to plant more native trees.
