Tower question

While driving through Belmont on I-85 S, I noticed a short, but wide self supported tower atop a large hill/small mountain not too far from my location (west of Belmont). What is it? A former AT&T Longline microwave site, or the cut off bottom of something else?

That is what's left of the old WBTV/ WBT-FM facility that was located on Spencer Mountain. The FAA required them to lower the tower from 500 feet to 250 on the mountaintop, in exchange for approving a new tall tower near Dallas, N.C. The old Spencer mtn tower now has a large number of communications antennas on it.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by ghattaway on 12/04/05 01:59 AM.</FONT></P>

It's my understanding that Jefferson-Pilot(or whoever they are now!)still owns the building up on Spencer? Is this true?
NOAA Weather Radio is one example of the array of communications using this historic site!

Uncle Jeff does still own the site. WLNK has a backup transmitter there and I think WBTV is building a backup there as well.

Another tower question

There's a self supporter on top of a mountain just outside of King's Mtn. Looks as if it was a former TV site, and may still be an active FM site (been some time since i've driven by it in daylight). It also appears to be an active microwave site.

Who's tower is it...and are there online pics of it?

You mean Crowder's Mountain?? Neat the jct of 74 & 85? WBAV 101.9 Gastonia.

That was a cool site. I liked the pics from the old jeffcasters, especially the one of Moira Quinn when she was a young hottie.

Yep- NOAA does have a transmitter there.
