Tower Site Of The Week

How close to San Diego were you for the "bird chirping" on KFI?

Back in the 80's, the Navy transmitter near College Grove (since torn down & Navy housing built on the land it was once on) used to have a bad harmonic on 640 that threw coded crap on KFI most of the time. It was extremely annoying in that part of town and could still be heard under KFI for at least 20-30 miles in each direction (maybe more).

There was a discussion about that navy radio station on the San Diego page, it could run a million watts on very low frequency for communicating with submarines around the world.

I hope boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=171142.10 works, if not, it ought to come up if you type navy radio station into the search box on the san diego page. The big 3 towers were a landmark all over the city, I wish they could have been saved. Alas.
