Tower site strength

Hopefully this storm wont damage too many towers. Especially those which have not been serviced in a while. I guess most qualified engineers would know more about this than I would. Some one mentioned the guy wire strength. Any of those towers further south to Winona Ms. could suffer some damage. I have seen some of those towers and the older ones could cause some problems. Just an observation. By the way, how many HAM radio operators will be up and running today?

Do you mean here, or in the impacted area?

Down on the Coast, I expect most are off-air right now ("QRT," hams would say), but a few are still on.

I have been listening on and off to the Hurricane Watch Network on 14.325 MHz (USB). Some of the Gulf Coast guys are on, but it's a bit tough to hear them all the time. That area is a bit short on 14 MHz; the signals are often over our heads. A couple hundred miles north, and they would be much easier to hear (odd, sometimes, to think of being too close to hear someone). I did copy an operator in Santa Rosa Beach pretty well just a minute ago. The operator in Pensacola, KQ4HV, was a bit tougher to hear.

The PD of WYCL in Pensacola is a ham (WA4CB), and has 2 meters up and running in his office -- a mag mount on a file cabinet. Of course, I won't hear that here. :)

I would imagine once the storm passes, ham activity will reach a peak -- 2 meters (144 to 148 MHz) especially.

The local hams are standing by if we get any adverse effects here, although it appears unlikely it will be needed. BTW: When weather is bad here, listen to 146.820 MHz FM, or if that machine is down, 146.880.

Guy wires which have not been tensioned correctly or for a long time can get what we call 'the wiggles'. The wind sets up vibrations along the length of the wire and eventually can shake the tower down. If the guys have been checked and adjusted recently it's usually OK and as DE said short term thunderstorms don't usually cause issues. But without metioning any names, I suspect there are a few neglected towers in the area. Current forecast is for about 40 MPH with higher gusts.

We shall see.

DE, my 80 foot tower and ICOM are picking up the Hurricane net pretty well. I talked to a couple of them about sunrise. Seems to be getting interesting down that way. There was a station in Key West that was trying to talk to me, but I couldn't hear him very well. You a ham?

Jeez, You guys are causing me geek moments.

I have my 2m handie talkie charged and on me... We shall gather together on the 146.82 repeater, and if that goes down there's always 146.52 simplex.

Not sure of the actual impact here. I know the tv meteorologists are having an orgasm over this storm, but frankly I think it's going to be further east than they predicted and we'll probably get a lot of rain but not much wind. That's my guess.

Luckilly I can watch the weather channel all afternoon from 1060 Union today :)

Well, me too. I e-mailed you some info if that's a good address in your profile.
