Towers

I'm new to the Tucson area and am always curious about what towers belong to what stations. This morning I was up in the Catalina Foothills area and noticed a three-tower array near Swan and Sunrise. I didn't see any transmitter shack nearby and was wondering if this is the old KSAZ site? Later on I was on a high ridgetop (Blackett's Ridge in Sabino Canyon) and saw what looked like a six-tower array in the general direction of the Foothills. Do these six towers belong to KJLL?

Swan Road is the old KIKX-580 site. After the FCC yanked the ticket, KSAZ was born using different sticks in Marana.

The owner of KHYT/1330 moved the COL from Tucson to South Tucson in - what was it, about 1981? In order to go 24-hours, he needed a directional array and had a biog zoning fight with the foothills people. His argument was that poor little South Tucson needed its first radio station.

It was a big fight but he won.

"From high atop ritzy Europhile Campbell Plaza, broadcasting in ENGLISH to South Tucson, this is KJLL..."

:)

I'm surprized that the old KIKX towers are still standing. I would think the land would be worth a lot more than the cost to remove the towers.

Speaking of the Jolt, in driving around the Foothills today I noticed that there is a loud hum on both their upper and lower sideband. Sounds like something is out of tune. I noticed they were off the air again last Friday during during the 6-7pm hour but I assumed it was storm related.

Actually for a short time, the towers on North Swan were used by KSAZ. KSAZ was then evicted and forced off the air. It took an extended period of time to find the site in Marana which has many drawbacks. My understanding is that the North Swan site is presently being used for radio transmitting but not broadcasting.

1330 was known as KHYT and they had two transmitter locations, one for day at Congress and the Freeway. The night towers were near Sabino Canyon. Like KSAZ, 1330 was off the air for an entire year a few years back but for different reasons. They now use the same site night and day.

A small point of clarificaton here.... After the KIKX Debacle, A new Entity used the Swan Road site.a short-lived station with the calls KJMM with a New Age / Jazz format. The station's lease on the tower site was not renewed and it went dark. Owl Brodcasting went on the air in 1995 with a temporary daytime only signal until the nighttime facilities were built, and now transmits from the Marana site... My understanding is that the Swan Road site is currently used iy the city and/or county for their VHF/UHF communications needs...

When I was PD of KRQ in the late 1980s, I lived right down the road from the 580 towers on Swan Road. Ironically, we were throwing a ratings party at my GM's house on the night that 580 (as KJMM) went dark in 1988. We listened to it at the party, and on the drive home, I stopped by the transmitter site and chatted with some of the (former) employees, who were hauling furniture out of the building and dumping most of it in the parking lot. That was a strange night indeed.
