Townsquare Media CHR's

My local CHR, WJBQ, was acquired last week by Townsquare Media. How does Townsquare do with running their CHR's like adding new music and the amount of older music. When WJBQ was owned by Citadel Broadcasting they were pretty great and added new songs fairly quick and had a good mixture of rock, pop, hip-hop and older songs. Then when Citadel merged with Cumulus Media the station changed a lot it became a CHR without all the current songs. The rock and older songs increased. The amount of newer songs decreased and hearing the newest hip-hop and dance was like forget it. Luckily the next market over had a Clear Channel CHR so I was able to hear Super Bass (Nicki Minaj) and similar songs about what seemed like 2 months before WJBQ. It improved this year and songs like Berzerk (Eminem), Blurred Lines (Robin Thicke) and Get Lucky (Daft Punk) were added within 2 weeks of release. I have a feeling Cumulus must have been improving. So what should I expect from Townsquare?

TSM is much better than Cumulus. They have format captains, but from what I know, they're not heavy-handed. They give the individual station programmers enough freedom to make the right decisions for their respective markets. Most TSM CHRs are fairly straight down the middle, as far as the playlist "lean" is concerned.

I agree. Townsquare CHRs don't all sound the same, although I don't think really any company's stations sound exactly the same, but they all have the same elements and it seems like many of those stations have very similar playlists. Townsquare however doesn't have a recognizable sound like Cumulus or CC do. One thing I don't like that they've been doing recently is forcing Billy Bush on all stations. As far as I know, KKLS is the only CHR that doesn't carry the show. This probably isn't that much of an issue here though since they're just exchanging one syndicated show for another. Come to think of it, the only CHR they've eliminated a jock position on is KFFM that I know of. Most of the other stations I know of that Billy Bush is now running were jockless in evenings. I'll have to check KISN now that I think about it, they did have an evening jock last time I listened.
