It's not the only sports outlet. Stephens Media has KBBO 1390 'The Fan', also on K283BX 104.5, K269HF 101.7 and KHHK 99.7-HD4.Kind of surprised at this one. Only sports outlet in town. Not an awful signal. I am sure the ESPN programming was barter, so other than power not a lot of expense. And plenty of support for local high school sports. The land where the 2 tower array sits looks fairly worthless for much else.
Of course, there was no FM translator attached to this one, so maybe just not worth the effort?

Chances are that particular station has listeners and is profitable, so it's worth investing in. Somehow I don't think KUTI has cleared .50 over expenses since 2008. Also, you need a station nearby that qualifies to diplex-with. Even if such a station existed near KUTI with the right length and orientation of towers, why would they invest half a million or likely more to move it?And yet Townsquare's spending big $$$ in Boise to diplex KIDO 580 on the 670 KBOI towers (towers owned by Vertical Bridge).
Second sports station in Yakima? What is the other one?KMWX was one of my favorite stations growing up, both in its oldies and classic country modes. I especially loved they were one of the few oldies stations to play the full versions of songs like "Light My Fire" and "Beginnings". As much as I'll miss the station I understand why it went away: the 2nd station in the sports format in an area that isn't exactly thriving (I go back to the Lower Yakima Valley twice a year).
I was in the Yakima Valley a couple of weekends ago and I was shocked how empty the AM dial is these days. What else is gone beside 1390 and 1460?104.5 The Fan (KHHK-HD2, K283BX, which calls themselves 104.5 and 1390 The Fan...in which the latter station has been silent for at least a YEAR!)
That is the Fox Sports affiliate, also airing a lot of KIRO-originated programs and Mariners/Kraken. But the signal dies before Sunnyside. So you get a mix of weak Christian radio (KPLP White Salmon) and Ranchera music (KZJJ Mesa) in Sunnyside/Grandview.
Another example is when station owners are just closing up and walking away, especially if the AM and maybe a translator are their only station(s). When you think about it; who cares whether they get in trouble with the Commission for not notifying that they've gone silent? They'll likely never intend on doing radio again, and the cost of their FCC lawyer is an expense they can avoid by walking away. Or, in some cases, they walk away after intending to restart the business but it doesn't work out and a silent approval period runs out.104.5 The Fan (KHHK-HD2, K283BX, which calls themselves 104.5 and 1390 The Fan...in which the latter station has been silent for at least a YEAR!)
I don't think KYNR would be as quick to give up its signal unless either the Yakama Nation decided to cease broadcasting or built/acquired an LPFM or full powered FM.1020 KDYK is also silent, as is KTCR-980. All that's left is KYAK, KIT, and KYNR. There may come a time very soon that there are no more AM signals broadcasting in Yakima County.
The 104.5 has always relayed the KHHK HD subchannel, never the 1390 KHZ signal.
I can't see how 93.7 La Estacion de La Familia is getting the signal. They are 'supposed' to relay from AM 1020.
