Toys for Boys

I attended Entercom’s Toys for the Boys Show this past Saturday, and it was pretty bad. The attendance was poor. I don’t have an exact number but if I would have to guess it would be somewhere around 1,000 people. And that probaly includes comps, workers, vendors, and entercom’s Staff.

Well last year I recall they had some pretty well known country bands... this year was Survivor. When was the last time they had a hit? I think that was the reason for the poor draw.

I also see they are not having their Pet Expo this year either. Last years at the arena was a bust for them. Shamrock capitalized on that and had their own and from what I heard it was successful - and they're doing it again.

I guess Entercom's events dept isn't like it used to be.

Was it ever really good? I mean yea, I went to one of their pet expos and that was pretty good but it's funny you said Shamrock had one too. I never realized that but I did notice once Shamrock had a Kids Fest and guess who had one shortly thereafter? They could atleast TRY to be original.

Kinda like the McDonalds vs Burger King thing I guess. From what I gather a number of people have jumped ship from Entercom and moved over to Citadel. Perhaps this is the reason for the lack of events and/or the lack of quality events.

I agree that originality is key... but there are just so many event types that one can do. Maybe Shamrock will be more creative with events, I think they're still green (no pun intended) in that area, but the success of their pet expo may lead them to doing some other unique things as well. Let;s see what happens.

I thought we were talking about Entercom...anyway the Kids Fest mentioned in a previous post, Shamrock does still do this event at the Steamtown Mall...the Pet Expo for Shamrcok was huge from what I understand. I think they do a fair amount of succesfull NTR's...one of the biggest radio evnets in the market has to be their Birthday Parties at the Woodlands, not only does it make money, it is a huge listener appreciation event. I wish I could steal it. They also have the longest running Easter Egg Hunt every year at Pocono Downs. If anybody is doing it right, I would have to say it is Shamrock.

Does anyone else find irony that someone named "SS" puts down Entercom events, especially the pet show? SS. Pets. Hmmmmm.

I speak the truth! Last years Pet Expo that Entercom put on, had very poor attendance. I was there on Sunday afternoon and the place was dead. The entertainment was cut back with no names to draw people to the event. And some vendors were also displeased with the poor attendnance. It just seems that the event has gone down hill over the years.

The Pet Expo that Shamrock put on last year was a bit different, it was smaller, had about 70 vendors but the crowds were there, admission was less and for their first shot at a Pet Expo, they did a great job.

Vendors who are going to participate in these shows aren't going to waste their money on events that don't draw traffic. That's a given. You need to keep events fresh and exiciting not only for the public but for the vendors who are footing the bill. Lack of attendance and promotion = lack of sales from the vendor side. Lack of sales for the vendor = no participation next time around. Simple economics.

Irony that I criticize Entercom events such as the Pet Expo? Nah, it's a mere review of the facts and sometimes the facts hurt.

...uhhh...no?

Maybe it's me.

The poster is trying to say that because I had a pet show on one of Entercom's stations, I should be strung up for criticizing their pet expo. I don't remember signing the "I won't bash the pet expo" contract.

Oh. Well then, I say we run you out of town on a rail!

I was hoping for Tar & Feathers :)

I think any event is tough to duplicate. Expectations are
always extremely high. The very fact that radio groups the size
of Entercom and Shamrock try to forge into the community while
others do not gives you an indication that they are at
least making an attempt. And let us not forget about the many
leisure and entertainment choices people have now vs. what they
had a few years back.

A great event can be put on year after year IF and ONLY IF the event is improved upon continuously. Otherwise, boredom and sameness set in fast to drive away crowds.

Scott, I don't care who you worked for or not. It was just the irony of the situation. Again, did the events improve upon themselves year after year? I didn't got to any of them so I can't speak on them.

Unfortunately, in this instance, the pet expo last year did not improve over the previous year. Perhaps the overhead of having an event at the arena cut into the budget for entertainment and things to draw the crowds. The lack of a "headliner" was missing in the entertainment lineup. And the remaining entertainment was the same from the previous expos. People tend to get tired of things quickly and without putting a new coat of paint on things every now and then, events like this can get stale. Look at Ringling Brothers - there'a only so many things you can do at a circus, but they manage to change things around every year and still maintain the "core". In this instance, there was just the "core".

Everyone around here knows that the people around here are tough to please. Harken back to the days of Vaudville.... "If you can make it in Scranton Wilkes-Barre, you can make it anywhere." The NEPA people were tough then, and they're probably tougher today!
