Tracking The Spins of Internet Radio

I was tipped off to a interesting site that is using new technology to track spins of songs on the big ol' InterWebs: www.streamserf.com.

Here's a cut/paste from the site:

What we do:
We listen to the radio... Lots and lots of radio. Then we take all that data we get from listening and package it up into meaningful reports.

Our patent-pending technology allows us to listen to literally thousands of radio stations at the same time: Satellite, Internet and Terrestrial stations! As a matter of fact, we are currently listening to over 30 MILLION HOURS of radio per year in 65 countries across the planet. If there's a song being played on the radio, there's a good chance we hear it.

Why we do it:
Simply put, it had to be done. As an independent artist or label, you have more than enough work to do just creating great music and getting the recognition you deserve. Having all of the data about radio airplay controlled by a couple of large companies and nearly inaccessible to you is just not right. We believe that you should have access to this data without having to pay some obscene fee for a radio airplay report on your own songs.

StreamSerf. com is independent. We are not owned or controlled by anyone inside the music or media industry. We report the data as it is... no embellishments, no extrapolations, no favoritism, no funny stuff... just the real numbers.

About the ..
We know just about everything there is to know about radio play... songs, artists, time of day, station details, genre, city, country, playlist neighbors, station ownership, contacts, tower locations, etc. More importantly, we take all of this massive data and slice and dice it into meaningful information that you can use.

There are Summary Reports inside for every band we've heard on earth over the last 30 days...FREE.

Site's slower than molasses, looks like crap in IE6, and I'll wager they don't do nearly as much "listening" as they claim. More likely they use "bots" that scan metadata. Something anyone can write if they have the disk space to store all that information.

Could be useful for independents, I agree - but not until they do something about the performance.

At the office, we continue to monitor it and get reports and while it seems to have some holes in the reporting, it is an interesting tool. I'm working on talking with the people behind it and I'll let you know what I find.

i'm the guy that wrote all the technology behind streamserf... yes - it actually does do what it claims... actually... we are monitoring MORE stations and songs than we claim.

bots... yep - that is one part of the recipe - but just a part. we also use an insane acoustic fingerprinting system (home grown) with an unbelievable library of fingerprints that both the internet and terrestrial capture devices around the planet use for identification.

about the speed... i do apologize. we've been slammed as of late. we're workin' hard on upgrading our systems and moving all the data over. all i can ask is that you have patience during the move.

we're also working on addressing any issues w/ IE6... we code for standards compliant browsers first, then we try to retrofit for the others...

i hope you can find some meaningful data at the site. if you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to email me paulm at streamserf dot com.

peace!

Does your methodology not allow a station like KNAC.COM to be monitored?

hey lpaz

technically - no, there are no limitations.

as of this morning, we had about 8500 stations that we are actively monitoring. we add more almost daily as we continually increase the throughput of our global listening network.

if there's something that i can specifically help knac with, please feel free to shoot me an email at paulm at streamserf dot com.

Just curious, we stream about 500K a month and I thought it peculiar that we weren't showing up on the "tracker."

What is 500k a month? Usually I track the concurrent maximum listener count, like for example 1500.

That's a ballpark on total monthly sessions streamed.
