Traffic And Weather Together!

The transition to Traffic and Weather together on the 3s must be complete now at WBZ.

I didn’t listen to morning drive today to confirm but I just heard a promo on WBZ announcing that you can now hear T & W together on the 3s all day long.

Yup, Joe Mathieu officially inaugurated it full time, during the 5am newscast (actually teasing it with Jen during the pre-show banter). :p

Sports at 15 and :45 seems to be a casualty of Traffic and Weather Together on the Threes. I haven't figured out when the sports summaries run. I thought they would stay at :15 and :45 but, I think they have moved a bit. Can someone who has figured it out, please post? Also the pre-recorded sports intro seems to be gone. (Intro, we hardly knew ye!) Another casualty seems to be the listing of the behind-the-scenes talent in the news blocks. There always (well, for months, anyhow) seemed to be such a rundown at 5:15AM. I imagine there were others in the 10A-3P and 3P-8P blocks (10:15A and 3:15P, maybe), but I never caught them.

I'm Wicked Confused!

This morning (Saturday, March 2nd), WBZ-1030 was back to "Weather on the 10's".

But that may only be in the short term.

Okay, sometimes (evening drive??) we have:

"Traffic and weather" together on the 3's after a short sports story by Tom Cuddy, followed by Diane Stearn giving some brief two-liner composed of who the Bruins or Celtics are playing.

Sometimes:

Traffic on the 3's and weather on the 10's with a full sports report (weekends?). I still heard this yesterday (Saturday) morning ???

They should settle on something and tell us what it is.

On the positive side, I like "Reporter's Journal" with Rod Fritz having various reporters give more in-depth info on current news stories. Probably a response to comparisons with WBUR and WGBH. It's an improvement.

KYW has an expanded report called Reporter's Roundup airing M-F 12:30-1 pm, and 3:30-4pm. The first Friday of the month, the noontime report expands to an hour, 12-1 pm.

AFAIK, WBZ only has one Reporters Roundup from 12:30 - 1 p.m. Mon. through Fri.

As to their traffic and weather reverting to the 3s and 10s on the weekends, I agree with the previous posters that it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. It could be that they will be phasing in the T&W together on the weekends similar to the phase in during the week over the past 3 weeks or so.

Or it could be that they will leave it this way on the weekends to provide time for the expanded sports reports at :15 & :45. Sports reports have definitely been downsized considerably during the weekdays now that they have T&W together on the 3s. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they go with sports updates from "The Sports Hub" during the week. What this means for their current sports reporters is anyone's guess.

They have tried a few times to either eliminate the sports reporter (Cuddy was absent for a time and the news anchor was doing the whole sports report) or what they are doing now which is to have him do one sports story and then have the news anchor do a brief update with spmething like who the Bruins or Celtics are playing at I think :41 and :11. Why does sports have to be decreased when they are doing "traffic and weather together?" It doesn't seem that one would require the other. It would seem to me that a regular sports report could follow at :16 & :46 or :17 and :47 after the traffic and weather.

Tom Cuddy doesn't work for BZ, he buys the time from BZ and produces the reports from his house. His partner in this venture Bruce Mittman sells Cuddy's reports to a sponsor. Cuddy and Mittman have been offering sports reports to stations on a barter basis since 1981 .Cuddy's deal with BZ started after his was laid off a few years ago

I think they should have Sports Hub Headlines twice an hour with the Sports Hub Headline people, except for AM drive when Jon Wallach needs to interact with Toucher and Rich more and when BZ's sports report should be longer. Wallach would be best to concentrate on the Hub and Perkins on BZ.

Hardy and Bertrand both interact with their shows though making that very difficult. Bertrand is practically a 3rd host.

I didn't know he did syndicated to other stations. And I thought Cuddy had been rehired, but obviously you know differently.

Tom Cuddy has been doing the a.m. Sports reports on the WCRN Morning News since soon after Peter Blute left the station.

Oh sure! Sports reports and sound cuts for stations...he's done that for years!

After working at a couple of New Hampshire stations doing news and sports ( Cuddy is featured in a video at the Jimmy Carter Library in Atlanta interviewing Carter during one of his first campaign trips to NH) Cuddy started Media Sports Reports later called Tom Cuddy Reports to provide primarily smaller stations with sports actualities and reports from games and during drive time. He also had a try out as a weeknd sports anchor at WMUR but that lasted about three weeks. He also worked as a stringer for Enterprise Radio and UPI. Around 1983, he landed a regular morning sports gig during Matty in the Morning. Richie Balsbaugh Kiss 108's GM and later owner had played professional basketball in the ABA for a few years and liked having a sports anchor in the morning.

Around 1984 or 1985, BZ's afternoon sports anchor Ed Coleman was fired following some legal troubles. Coleman returned to WCAP for a while before making it big at WFAN in NYC. Coleman was fired by BZ GM Carey Pahagian who Coleman had given his first radio job to when Coleman was PD at WCCM.

Cuddy continued to operate his sports business but BZ did not know he was feeding stations in the Boston market. When Gil Santos found out that Cuddy was on AM 1060 using the name Bill Whitting he went to management and Cuddy was prohibited from doing on air work at station that could be heard in Boston.

He was always a freelancer and never BZ employee. When he was laid off along with Steve L., Alan Segal and Lovell Dyatt Cuddy struck a barter deal with the station.

I have worked with a lot of people over the past 32 years in broadcasting and I can say without hesitation that Cuddy is the most repulsive and miserable individual I have ever had to work around. I would like nothing more to have 1030 start using Sports Hub resources for their afternoon sports reports and end thier relationship with Cuddy.

Wow, please tell us how you really feel?

Well, say what you will about him, but he gets and A+ for finding a way to stay on the air whether as an employee, buying time or whatever. From a listener point of view he sounds good on the air. Seems like a guy who busts his rear to make it in radio.

Seems fairly common that that the people who strike out on their own are are hard to work with - but when your livelyhood is on the line there isn't a lot of time for BS.

Not saying that Tom Cuddy is in this league, but Bill Gate and Steve Jobs were both well known to be total, miserable A**H**** to work with and for but it seems to have served them both well.

I think I remember hearing him doing sports on WARA Attleboro in the late 70s-early 80's. I thought at the time it was a staff gig, but was WARA just one of the stations taking his feed?

One of my DJs always used to put on his 'Joe Radio' voice and mimic him as "Your Buddy....Tom Cuddy"
I don't think it was meant as a compliment.

Regards,
TSB
