Traffic.Com Sets IPO

From www.allaccess.com, Wednesday, 31 August, 2005, this:

TRAFFIC.COM is going public with an $86.3 million IPO, the WAYNE, PA-based company said on WEDNESDAY (8/31). The move to sell the common stock is intended to raise funds to repay debt and for general corporate expenses. WR HAMBRECHT is the underwriter for the IPO; the stock will trade under the symbol TRFC on NASDAQ. The company provides real-time traffic information for broadcast, government, and data uses like XM's NAVTRAFFIC and wireless applications. Partners in the company include EMMIS, COX RADIO, BONNEVILLE, and VIACOM's TV O&Os.

The rest of the story

The AP story adds the following points:

<blockquote>
Proceeds from the offering will be used to pay down debt and for general corporate purposes, the Wayne, Pa.-based company said. For the six months ended June 30, Traffic.com reported a net loss of $11.4 million, compared with a loss of $8.6 million a year earlier.

Some of the shares will be sold by holders, the filing said.
</blockquote>

Historically, IPO's (Initial Purchase Offerings) are considered risky investments for individual investors. Many were burned in the dot.com boom of the late 90's and early 0's. Often the the only ones to profit are company insiders holding stock options ("shares...sold by holders"). Financial planners urge individuals to pay off outstanding debt before undertaking such investments.

Traffic.com is the number three provider of radio traffic information behind the much larger Shadow Traffic/Metro Networks (Viacom) and Total Traffic (Clear Channel).
